My friend who has been living in Costa Rica for the past 7 years has JUST informed me that he may have kidney failure due to food poisoning. He claims taht the hospital there treated him for food poisoning then sent him on his way. however, he's sent pics to his brother who is a neurosurgeon, and he says its the early signs of kidney failure and that he may possibly need dialysis. I've been reading about it and many signs point to hemolytic uremic syndrome. Anyone have any theories on this strange phenomenon?

  • Yes! Food poisoning can lead to kidney failure. Typically it's E. coli that has this effect. (Not that E. coli always results in kidney failure, but that food poisoning resulting in kidney failure is usually E. coli.) I have a friend whose husband almost died because of this very situation, and another who ended up in the hospital with an E. coli infection in her kidney.
