Can a doctor drop you during treatment?

Are there any circumstances when a doctor can legally drop a patient while they are having complications after surgery, without referring the patient to another doctor for care? Why would this happen, unless it's fear of a malpractice lawsuit? The patient was told that everything was perfect and the same was written in the chart, even though it was obvious to everyone that there were complications.
