My girlfriend went to the gynecologist(sp) last week (she is 19). She checked her for breast cancer and found a lump in the right side. The doctor said this might be cancer and to come back one week after her period.

I checked it for her, everytime i touch it, it hurts her(thats in an advance stage of cancer).

It turned a little red this morning. Its the size of a quarter.

Does anyone know if this can be cancer?

  • Usually the signs to check for breast cancer would be soreness, tenderness in breasts, loss of pigmentation in some areas and lumps. Testing for this would be a mamogram, until then it could just be a mass of hard tissue or if there is a tumor that doesn't mean it is necessarily benign.

  • My first thought is fibroadenoma which is a fibrous tumor that is more common in that age group. If I was her I would ask for ultra sound of the breast. My daughter at the age of 18 found a lump in her breast and the radiologist recommended a surgical follow up after she had an ultra sound done and that's what it was.

  • Well she has a problem. For some odd reason she doesnt want to tell her parents.Meaning, no insurance. Is it common for 19 yr old girls to be diagnosed with breast cancer? There is no history in her family of any kind of breast disease.

  • I had a lump removed 4 or 5 years ago. It turned out to be a "fatty benign tumor" ie no cancer. It sounds like the Dr suspects fibroid tissue which is very common and gets worse during menses/periods, PMS time. Caffiene, chocolate, and alcohol will make them more painfull. If it is fibroid tissue the recommendation is cut out caffiene, alcohol, and choc. Take tylenol or mydol for pain. However do not take it lightly. She still needs to have the follow-up appointment to be sure.Good luck to you both,Lesa

  • Why did she let such a thing become the size of a quarter? She should be administering daily breast manipulations to check for a mass while showering.Or if she takes baths, she can put her breast under water by leaning over in the water and let it so-call float and this is a good way to detect lumps with distinct shapes. The doctor could have aspirated it by taking a needle and obtaining sample tissure.Doctors can tell by the feel of the mass...if it is round in shape with no distinct edges and when you move it around and it seem like a marble...it is usually benign....usuallyWhen it comes to changing colors, that is a different story....Dr should not have let the time go by for her to come on her period...he could have soothe some feelings immediately by doing as aspiration...it is nothing out of his pocket...

She is on her way right now to visit the doctor right now, I hope its nothign serious.
