My fingernails just turned blue. This has never happened to me before.

I've been having shallow breathing for a few weeks. I've had some kind of unidedtified illness for almost two months now, and symptoms have appeared and disappeared in this time. I thought I was getting better, and then I started to have troubles breathing. Now my fingers are shaking, but they aren't blue anymore. When they were, the edges of my lips were too. I have an appointment with an internist for the whole illness in two weeks, but I'm pretty scared about this whole blue thing. What should I do?

  • I know how scary this can be. My 13 month old son unfortunately died 2 weeks ago after he stopped breathing in his sleep. The day before, he had blue lips, feet, and hands. But 2 doctors found nothing obvious wrong. The autopsy hasn't found anything significant yet, so we're waiting for an answer. Not to scare you, but obviously I am very concerned for you, and if I was you, I would insist on a chest x-ray, EKG, and bloodwork at the least. I don't know if the would've for sure found anything with my son, but maybe had I pushed for further testing, they may have found something. Good luck to you.

  • Blue nails and lips mean either you're not getting enough oxygen into your system, or you're not getting enough blood flow into your extremities. The one is lung related, the other heart. Is this undiagnosed illness respiratory? If yes, you may need to see a pulmonologist. If not, where is it?I'd maybe call the internist and ask if you can get an earlier appointment. If the blue color doesn't go away, or if your fingers are blue without feeling cold, you should see someone RIGHT AWAY!! As in ER. There are a lot of minor things it could be. But there are a couple of majjor things, too, and it would be more prudent to act as if it's major until told otherwise. Lungs and hearts are not things to be messed with.Hang in there.
