Bloody Sputum

I have not been coughing it up, but since January, I have been having bloody phlegm. Sometimes it just appears in my mouth-- other times, I need to clear my throat.

I went to the doctor for it a month ago, but she said it was probably an infection and gave me medicine. The blood (not the phlegm) went away for less than a week-- then it came back.

I also have a sore throat that is worse every time I wake up.

I know I have GERD (but I have no insurance right now, so I'm not taking medicine for it)-- is it possible that the acid is causing my throat to bleed and my body is producing sputum as a defense?

  • Yvonne, go to a thread on 9-16-07 titled Hemoptysis & see if you are having the same situation. My daughter started this on January 27th of this year. Thanks

  • Thanks for pointing me to that post. I seriously have no idea what is wrong with me-- all I have is this (and I'm not sure any of it is related to each other or if it's all separate):+sore throat (worse every morning)+bloody phlegm (although I've noticed that if I blow my nose in the morning, there is blood in the mucus that comes from the back right nostril-- never the left...which is interesting because the phlegm also seems to be forming at the right section of my throat)+GERD symptoms that have worsened recently -heartburns that don't go away (I've had them for 2 weeks straight and antacids will only calm them for less than a minute. I wake up with heartburns, when I eat--even if I just eat cereal-- they're still there, and I sleep with them). -excessive gas/bloating/belching -nausea+headache that comes when the heartburns and nausea are at their worst.

  • make sure you get a chest xray to rule out lung cancer I can do that, but I don't smoke, I've only been exposed to smoke at concerts (and I've gone to 10 of them throughout my life time). I don't have a cough, no wheezing, no appetite loss... Has anyone heard of bloody sputum being related to acid reflux? I was just wondering because I've been having a problem with acids lately and I can't even sleep flat. I'm wondering if I have an ulcer...
