I like to donate blood 3 or 4 times a year. 50% of the time my iron is too low to donate. I have started adding iron pills (150% RDA) to my multivitamin (100%) a week in advance. I eat steak the night before donating. This time I was at 36, the cut off is 38. I am on Weight Watchers and don't eat red meat much. I also drink a lot of coffee. How do I get my iron up and is this condition dangerous?

  • Call the nurses at the blood donor clinic. They will be able to answer your questions and tell you if you should not be giving blood anymore, or only a specified amount of times. You don't want to risk your own health. What a good person you must be! Your concern for helping others is amazing. Most people would never give blood again. Good luck!

  • Iron supplements don't work unless you have a serious dietary deficiency, the body's iron is very tightly regulated and the body will absorb the same amount of iron no matter how much you take. Try visiting your doctor if you are worried and get checked for anaemia?

  • Coffee is preventing iron absorbtion. Don't drink coffee, tea, milk or cocoa until at least two hours after eating the iron rich foods. Orange juice and tomato juice are two things that will enhance iron absorbtion, if consumed with or immediately after the meal.
