My neice has had these strange marks that appear, fade, then reappear on the inside of her arm for about a year now. It looks like bleeding under the skin and appear as lines right across the crease at the bend in her arm. These marks have recently began to travel up her arm and now she gets them on her shoulder but as dots. No medical professional has been able to tell us what is causing these marks- please help!

Thanks,

Traci

  • Look up petechiae. They are small red dots which are capillaries bursting and blood coming to the skin's surface. Many conditions can cause this. Usually though this indicates some type of bleeding disorder.

  • Thanks, but I looked petechiae up and it doesn't look anything like what she has. These look almost like hickies on her arm and shoulders- they are at times purple and then fade.

  • Here is idea to check- I was diagnosed with thrombocytopenia with all 3 of my pregnancies, cleared up after I gave birth. Well, my platelets are always low but not in the "doctors-are-freaking-out-checking-my blood-once-a-week" kind of way.In fact the bruising was my first pregnancy symptom each time. This is not normal bruising- it looks pretty bad but was painless. I would get "bruised" from strange things: shoulder strap on purse, seat belt, etc. Body is making platelets and for reasons unknown is also destroying the platelets (so transfusions do not work). With so few platelets blood does not clot. I would get a small scratch and it would not clot for hours, just keep flowing...There is no treatment except maybe removal of spleen- not good idea even when not pregnant. Since my doctors had no useful advise other than test after test I checked out alternative medicine sites, adjusted my vitamins, avoided even acne medicine with salylic acid and ate green leafy veggies to keep my platelet count up. My blood never was in normal range, but these things did help quite a bit.Oh- and thrombocytopenia is not a pregnancy sympton, that is just when it happens to present with me. Men can have the condition. It can come and go for no apparent reason. If wanting to look into this: a simple blood test to count the platelets is all it takes. Good luck.
