I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder about 9 months ago and my first maniac episode (had two total) was two years ago.

I am on valproic acid now (1000 mg a day) and used to be on lithium.
Both cause me sleepiness and muscle/joint weakness.

Understand that lithium and valproic acid are the best mood stabilizers for bipolar disorder.

Have you experienced this or have ideas on other medication possible?

  • I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder a little over three years ago. Since that time I have tried a number of different medications. The daily meds I am on now (and have been for the last year and 1/2) are 15 mg of Lexapro, 300 mg of Wellbutrin Sr and 300 mgs of Provigil. I also take 30 mgs of Restroil every night to help me sleep. I use to think that this was way too much, but I have actually felt the best I have in a long time. None of these meds make me feel weary like some of the ones I've taken before and I can once again get up each morning and go to work. Its been a long haul though. Good luck to you. I hope you find a med combination that works for you. It has made all the difference in the world for me.
