Hi,
This is my first post so apologies if I have not done or read something properly- I thought I had done!

I really need some help! I have a huge flatulence problem. I am so embarrassed by it- I cant describe just how bad it smells and do not seem to be able to prvent it.

I have tried so many things, eliminating food from my diet (I now do not eat starchy carbohydrates, broccoli, cauliflour, oranges, beans and pulses, strawberries- any berries, tomatos.... only drink skimmed milk in my tea) I also drink my recommended glasses of water every day. :confused:I eat a very limited diet to put it mildly. Same thing day in day out.
I have tried taking those bacteria drinks (probiotics I think they are called) but they actually made things worse and after taking them for 2 weeks I actually ended up in accident and emergnecy as I have sevear stomach pains. I was advised not to take them again after they did a blood test.
I have tried the gas/bloating relief tablets such as deflatine, windese...etc which actually did nothing what so ever. Even after I upped the dose to double what was advised.

I excercise well, (5 days a week, 2 or more hours a time at cardio level) eat very healthily (I used to have anorexia, I am now a very healthy weight (bmi24, I wish I didn't weigh that much but in the past year my weight just seems to have sky rocketed for no real reason) and still avoid eating fat, processed foods, sugar and meat (except for fish) as a result of my past eating disorder. Everything I cook is steamed. I also cannot see what else I am eating or drinking that could be making me have such a problem.

I saw my GP. I saw her as I also have alot of bloating. I was too embarrassed to mention the flatulence. Even the GP thought I was pregnent. (very heart breaking for someone who has a history of anorexia and yes I do get this alot. Never get used to it though). I had an x-ray which showed my bowels were clear /no cysts or tumors and the doctor said it must be IBS.

I don't think its IBS. I have tried all the IBS suggestions I can find: mint oils, buscopan, peppermint tea (yuck!) and still the problem persists.

Alongside the bloating it is making my life ***l and I don't know where else to turn. I don't think its worth me going back to see my GP as they have decided its IBS (2 different doctors) on the basis that its nothing else that shows up on an x-ray so it must be IBS. Yet even IBS suggestions do nothing for me.

Also theres the smell, :eek:its unlike any other I can describe as it is so strong and so terrible- its not just me. Others do mention it weather they know its me or not.

Can anyone help?

  • Try eliminating all dairy, eggs, and grains from your diet. You may have an underlying allergy or intolerance to them. Only eat veggies and fruit (single ingredient - no additives). If that doesn't help, google parasite cleanse. Well thats easy aside from the skimmed milk in the morning (roughly 30mls in a cup of tea) there is no dairy and no eggs. I only eat veggies, fruit and steamed white fish. And water. (and still have no idea why my weight is so high! I ate fewer calories then this on an anorexic diet!) I will try the google suggestion, thanks!

  • I suggest you look what the probiotic drinks contained. I am guessing they contained sweetening agents that can make the problem much worse. I strongly suggest you buy probiotic tablets which contain lactobacillus acidiphilus, 10 milions a tablet, and take one tablet with your lunch and one with your dinner. I went through exacely what you are describing before I discovered the remedy. Good luck!

I actually had already earlier today gone out and bought some, but had bought some charcole tablets with them too and am going to give each a week to see if they make any difference. So far the charcole tablets have done nothing. Still alot of gas. Still smells oddly of rubber (??) And I have taken 12 pills in just under 12 hours (2-3pills a dose, 300mg a pill) will give these a week before I try the pro/prebiotic tablets I have. See if they just have to take time to work through my system or something. Its good to hear it could have simply been the sweetner in the drinks as I had only ever tried the sugar free/fat free type which will obviously have many additives in them. Really hope its something (especially as they were not cheap!) and hope that it can be sorted out with a pill, I don't know what else to do otherwise!

  • Yes, it takes a couple of days before they get into your system. Charcoal tablets shoud work too, but you can get constipated, which can make the problem worse. I only use charcoal in an emergancy situation when nothing else helps. I am worried that you only eat certain foods. The goal must be that you return to ordinary varied diet. Another advise is to only eat very fresh, homemade food and avoid all additives. Also, have yoghurt with living culture and souerkraut often, and other fermented foods with lactic acid. If all of this doesn't help, then I think you must suffer from celiac disease or lactos intolerance or similar. I really wish you best of luck, cause I've been through all of what you have described.

  • Some people are unable to digest some enzymes. If you eat a lot of beans or legumes this might be what's causing it. Have you tried something like Beano?

LoL! just shows how slow my digestion is! - have been taking so many charcole tablets- lost count today but near enough doubled it today as it was not working for me (some slight effect now could alost consider myself "normal" now- almost!) but I have yet to be constipated nearly 48 hours later! :D (infact still have along side the flatulence the complete opposite of constipation, didn't mention this earlier as I figured flatulence was enough of an issue for me to write about!) Oh the joys! I think if I don't laugh I will cry!!;) Will post when I take the pro/prebiotics (bought from boots) when I try them next week.
