i explained my symptoms in a thread a few days ago, and the most compelling answer i got was a b12 deficiency. when looking at it, i think i may have had a deficiency for a very long time and have only recently been compelled to research more into it because my symptoms have been getting worse. what i want to know is, what should i do now?

what tests do i have to take? can i just buy the vitamin over the counter? is there something else i should be taking or foods i should be avoiding because of this?

any and all information on b12 deficiency would be appreciated.

again my symptoms have been
-Weird mucus (yellowish and clear in color) dripping down my throat at times
-Bad headaches
-Tender scalp
-Blurred vision
-Twitching all over my body (even in private areas)
-Achy joints (or achy muscles by those joints, not sure)
-Cracking joints
-Burning sensation of the skin
-Sudden and brief bursts of heat in the back of my neck, shoulders, hands and feet
-Tingling in hands/feet
-Feels like popcorn popping/spasming of muscles
-Crawling sensation in the back of my neck
-On and off lisping
-Seizing of muscles in neck
-As of late I feel like either I can't hold my pee as well or I have to pee more
-Gas. Lots and lots of gas. My bowels just feel irritated. I can't stress this enough.
-Random low fevers... This was happening since around December
-Nausea. It was worse mid-march but now it comes and goes
-Difficulty swallowing (not swallowing food)
-Difficulty breathing. Recently went to the ER but they said my lungs were clear, even though at one point I felt completely light headed and as if my air passage was squeezing
-Random chills
-Difficulty sleeping
-Out of sorts sometimes/confused
-What feels like pinches or sometimes electricity???? in my back muscles
-FATIGUE
-Weight loss (due mainly to anxiety, but maybe something else)...
-Ringing in ears (this has been happening for YEARS)
-Pressure building up in ears followed by popping (and sometimes a clicking sound)

These symptoms have been so varied and different, but even as they started happening I knew they were all somehow related. Like, I've never been a gassy person by nature, yet suddenly (no different foods, nothing) my stomach was constantly rumbling and my bowels have just generally been constantly upset. Around the same time, the muscle pain, twitching, spasming, EVERYTHING started too. As well as the neck pain/stiffness, headaches, low-fevers, ears ringing louder than usual and popping, pins and needles, certain parts of my body feeling numb (usually my extremities), heat spots/cold spots, chills, all my joints cracking and just a whole ARRAY of everything.

I was sure (and still kinda believe) that I was being plagued by a life threatening illness because of how generally unwell I've been feeling for the last 6 months. I complained to my GP about all of this, who humored me by giving me a neurology appt. I've been to the neuro, was said to be fine. I'm just waiting on MRI results and an EKG test in June (at my insistence, even though the neuro didn't think i needed one).

Everyone thinks it's in my head, but I feel like I'm slowly being run into the ground. I've even had to quit my internship because of the wide spread muscle pain and malaise. If a b12 deficiency is the root cause of all of this I would be so thankful because it would mean I'm not dying of some horrible disease (as I've begun to think for a while now) and I can DO something about it.

so again, any and all information on b12 deficiency would be great. also, if my symptoms stand out to you as being something else, please tell me your thoughts on that too. thanks!

  • OMG! I just finished reading your post. I have been diagosed with B12 deficiency and have many of the very same symptoms. The nerve pain, the cracking of joints and ear ringing have been the worst. I also hear a clicking sound in my head that happens mostly when I talk, but not always. No one has been able to tell me what this clicking is and I know it is NOT my tmj....my tmj makes a dull sound and it happens only when I open my mouth very wide. Right now, I am not taking any B12 supplementation. Let me know how you are doing and what kind of treatment you have received. Also, did your symptoms get worse before getting better?Susan

  • Hi Susan and others with similar issues!I have been a walking medical mystery for about 20 years. Only because this has gotten worse, I am searching and ended up here. Why are doctors so incompetent these days?? They don't care? In Europe you would not be rushed out of the office...with an anti-depressant!! Horrible. Lady bug has so many symptoms that it can really be difficult to diagnose! Susan, how were you diagnosed with B12 deficiency? I also believe I have a deficiency as I have pain, burning every day....and chronic hunger. I am 5'7, 120 pounds and eat healthy. But unless I eat every 2-3 hours, I have a complete meltdown that no one understands!!! People think I am a bit crazy and WHY COMPLAIN at 120 pounds and have to eat all the time....POOR ME! LOL, not. It is not just hunger, I literally meltdown. I get so irritated and weak and a vast array of symptoms. Truly tired of trying things and endless hours of research! Years of this...any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I do feel for anyone with these symptoms. No one should have to suffer like this...it is not living.xoxo to all

  • I am by no means a doctor, I am taking medical billing and coding so this is what my book says about B12 deficiency...Medical Term is pernicious anemia: Lack of mature erythrocytes caused by inability to absorb vitamin B12 into body.Definition says is necessary for the proper development and maturation of erythrocytes. Although vitamin B12 is a common constituted for food (liver, kidney, sardines, egg yolks, oysters), it cannot be absorbed into the bloodstream without the aid of a special substance called the intrinsic factor that is normally found in gastric juice. People with pernicious anemia lack this factor in their gastric juice, and the result is unsuccessful maturation of red blood cells in the bone marrow and large often oval red cells (erythrocytes in the circulation. Treatment is administration of vitamin B12 for life.. ( pernicious anemia means ruinous or hurtful). As for my self I have diabetes and about all the symptoms apply to me. I have nerve damage though, the thing is it is my back and not my arms, but it tingles and hurts my arms and leg. The doctor if you have something wrong in certain it affects other areas even though the test show no nerve damage. I am no means a doctor as I said but ask about the shots. I have had them before and they worked had some of the symptoms. The shots hurt but I felt like almost a new woman except for diabetes. Haven't had a problem yet...make you tired and you hurt all over...Lena Allen

  • I was diagnosed with B12 deficiency (Count 150) some 3 months back, am taking oral pills. My symptoms, which I am still not sure are due to B12, included soreness and pain in foot while getting up from a stationery lying down position usually early mornings. While I have taken lot of pilsl there is zero change in symptoms, in fact shoulder pains have also started and I cannot turn over on the left shoulder while sleeping. I keep a decent exercise course (5 days a week) with mild jogging of 3-4 miles / day or cycling (interchangeably) 10-15 miles a day. So far not sure what the problem is .......

  • LoveChanel,I was diagnosed with B12 deficiency in June of this year. They used a test called Spectracell. I understand that a Urinary MMA while conclusively tell you if you are truly B12 deficient. This is what is so confusing. At times, my B12 serumlevels are normal and other times below level. I did realize I was taking a small amount of B12 at the time, but just becauseyour B12 reading is normal, doesn't mean it is getting into the tissues. I also have an abnormal B12 binding capacity.I am seeing an ND and a nutritionist. I had a test done called 23andme. It is a little expensive but it will show what is goingon with your DNA, and DNA does not lie. You will only have to get this test done once in your life.If you get it done, I know someone who will read it for you. Just let me know. Now, about your hunger issues. Have you been tested for parasites? It sounds like it could be you have parasites. Have youbeen out of the country in the last 20 years? How long has this hunger been going on? Find out where you could be testedfor parasites? Where do you live? Find a reputable dr that will look into this. This is very important. Let me know what happens.I can't understand your burning issues. Neuropathy can be caused by so many things. Where is your burning pain? Describe it to me.Also, check this out: MTHFR support forum and sign up (no cost) and post this very same question. Someone will respond. There are drs there who will respond to your question at no cost. They might suggest the MTHFR test that your dr can suggest you get. I did and I am on the road to recovery. Write me back and let me know how it goes. Good Luck!
