I'm a 22 year old female, I've had bloodwork done recently, and everything is fine. I don't smoke, am not overweight and I have started noticing a problem a few days ago. I recently started birth control, not even a month ago, and my gyno told me that if i notice any strange feelings or pains in my legs to be concerned. Well, I noticed on my left leg, behind the knee (where you bend your leg) there is slight swelling and also there is pressure and very slight pain when I walk, it's very hard to describe.

Is it really possible that I could have a clogged artery or something at the age of 22?

  • As I'm sure you know, the primary concern with BC is the possibility of blood clots. Since you do not smoke, the risk is dramatically decreased, but still exists. I would recommend speaking with your OB/GYN about your swelling and discomfort on the off chance that it could be a clot. The primary concern with blood clots is that they can break off where they originate and travel up to your lungs or heart causing serious problems. Hopefully, you do not have a clot. It may even be something as simple as a bizzare reaction to the medication (such as allergies) and you may just need to try a different type. Best of luck!

  • I know that there is this thing called a Bakers Cyst and it is located directly behind your knee. Look it up and see if the symptoms are similiar.

  • Get an ultrasound done asap. This will help rule out a blood clot or cyst. Just do this to put it out of mind...After I had my second baby I had a LOT of complications, and felt this pain in my calf. I thought it was possible that it could be a clot, and my doc had an ultrasound done...sure enough, that's what it was! Please just do this to rule it out. Hopefuly it will be nothing, but if it is a clot then you'll want to address it right away. Also, look up your BC on www.drugs.com to find out ALL of the possible side effects. There can be many. Just be informed. Best wishesDOM
