Boyfriend is 29Y/O. Drinks / Smokes pretty regularly. He doesn't want to go to doctor / hospital as he has no medical insurance right now. Dart from dart board did go through hand 1 month ago, but puncture site has healed. He is now experiencing painful arm / back / neck spasms & twitching with occasional numbness of the hand. He is convinced it is tetanus, but given the rarity of it, I believe it may be caused by something unrelated - nerve damage, low potassium, low blood calcium? He has been been having difficulty sleeping past week as these symptoms generally occur when he is laying down. Any recommendations appreciated, am very scared for him.

Link to a good article that has other tetanus links.http://www.helium.com/items/1299740-tetanus-or-lock-jaw Tetanus can be life threatening and as he is having spasm in his neck I think it would be worth a trip to get a professional opinion. The disease is also known as lock jaw. If he experiences that get him to the docs ASAP. Also if he starts to grimace in a strange involuntary way.Therre are no expensive tests necessary but they would probably want to run blood tests to rule out the other things you have mentioned. The disease is only rare nowadays because of the vaccine and the fact that it is more of a soil borne organism and most of us live in cities. The dart tip should not have had Tetaus spores on it but better safe than sorry. However we do not know what was in the dart board and tetanus spores can live for years and years.Good Luck
