My seven year old son has been running a fever for four days now. It is ranging anywhere from 99.8 to 101.9. He has no symptoms with it though. I took him to the doctor once already and they couldn't figure out what is wrong with him. I don't know what to do. I cannot send him to school and he isn't getting any better. I plan to take him to the doctor again tomorrow.

  • Are you sure he has no other symptoms? How are his bowel movements - are they regular? Constipation or diarrhea? Does he have any achiness? Is he tired? Any headaches or stiff neck? Any nausea? Any feeling of chills/coldness? Any sweating? How frequent is his urination? Any problems urinating? A low grade fever like that could be many things. Infection, virus...really try to ask your son about symptoms he may not be aware of, especially digestion or urinary problems. Best wishesDOM

  • Depending on where you live, spring is starting up. If he has allergies, for some people, they can get a bit of fever when allergies start up. Maybe it is the body's immune system reacting.A fever in a child is always frustrating if you don't know what it is coming from. When you took him in last time, did they do a basic CBC (blood count for red and white cells)? If not, make sure they do it this time. If there is any infection, it ought to show up in that kind of blood test.Is he sleeping normally? Going to bed and waking up the same as usual? Eating normally? Interested in the same things as normal? Is he upset with school? I know that sounds odd, but some kids, if they are very upset with going to school sometimes seem to raise their temperature just from stress. And on that same thought, is there anything very stressful in his life right now?I am interested to see what you write back.Best,Shula

  • Dear shula,Thanks for your advice. I took him back and the doc did a chest xray and it came back just fine. Weird thing is he spiked a temp of 103 that day and then it finally broke after that. Nobody really knows what was wrong with him but the good news is he is just fine now. My theory is he had a pretty good virus kickin his butt. I'm just glad it's over now.gschwausch

  • I'm glad he is feeling better. It is strange...but there is actually a diagnosis in the pediatric textbooks called "fever NOS" meaning "not otherwise specified." And it happens that kids will get a fever, and simply not show anything suggestive of any particular problem. And then it goes away. Frustrating, scary, but at least it went.Enjoy your now healthy son. :)Best,Shula
