My 15 y.o. son has extreme hunger, excessive thirst, intermittent blurry vision, irritability, unusual tiredness. These symptoms all point to diabetes (which there is a great deal of familial history both Type 1 and 2), however, random blood finger-****k testing shows normal blood sugar. Any other ideas???

Pediatric dr. doesn't seem overly interested in getting to the bottom of this. He has gained 40 pounds and is eating us out of house and home. Difficult to rise in morning because of multiple nightly wakenings to urinate due to excessive liquid intake (anywhere from gallon to two gallons of fluids intake in the late afternoon/evening hours).

Thanks in advance.

  • Any red strechmark on his body and does his face tend to be very red? Does he have any kind of muscle pain or weakness? Kiera

  • Thanks for the quick responses. I did get the name of my niece's endocrinologist if ped refuses to do a fasting or the 2-hr glucose tests (my 12 y.o. niece was diagnosed Type 1 last year). I have not noticed the dark "velvety" appearance of skin creases, but my son does get extremely red in the face with very little exertion.

  • Then symptoms are very diabetes like, but there could be a number of causes, and some more likely then others. Hypoglycemia and pituitary/hypothalamus disorders are two likely ones besides diabetes. When I asked about the red strech marks and red face, I was thinking thinking it might be caused by the hypothalamus, or pituitary gland. Cushings is caused by excessive cortisol levels. The cortisol causes excessive hunger and moodswings, fatiuge and more. It also caused Diabetes Inspidius, that would explain the thirst. The strech marks would be the same kind you get while pregnant, only they would be red. You might find them on the inside of his thighs, under his upper arm, stomach or lower back. It would also cause him to feel horrible in the mornings. Kiera
