Hey, I’m wondering if anyone can help me out. It started about a year ago when my scalp started to itch. I didn’t think too much of it, but then it started to get worse. It started to itch more as well as some hair loss and flaking. I went to my doctor and he told me to use head and shoulders. After that didn’t help I went back and this time he told me to use a shampoo called Polytar, which I am currently using. I’ve just recently noticed little red dots on my scalp and continued hair loss/thinning. I don’t think its dandruff, the last time I used gel or any hair products was when I was a lot younger (I’m 19 years old now). I could also be Psoriasis.

Any help would be grateful, thanks

  • Have you had your thyroid checked? Hypothyroidism causes itching of the skin & hair loss.

  • Have not heard of Hypothyroidism, but I'll look into that. my facial hair is fine, its just the scalp, so i dont think it's alopecia. i have not used any products in my hair for a while including hair dye or ligheners. Thanks for the help.

  • Do you take any vitamins/supplements? Sometimes hair loss is a sign of vitamin/mineral deficiency: essential fatty acids, B6, riboflavin, biotin and zinc are just a few. Any other symptoms? I would get a good quality supplement at a health food store - especially the EFA's as they are essential and we can only get them through our diet (unless you are eating fish 3times a week you are probably deficient) Hope this helps,DOM

  • well I've been a vegetarian almost my whole life, but i have been taking protein shakes (elite whey protein) for about 5 months now. i checked the ingredients and nothing in there i shouldnt take. I doubt that would have any effect, but i could be wrong.

  • You need to find a vegie source for Essential Fatty Acids. These are essential to the body and our body doesn't make them - deficiency is very common and it can cause dry skin, hair loss, ezcema, acne, and low immunity. I suggest a good quality flax seed oil as well as borage and evening primrose oils. Take these internally. A good topical treatment you can try is an aloe product called Herbal Aloe Force skin gel - it has herbs and colloidal silver and is excellent for all kinds of skin problems. Google it for more info and ordering. A protein supplement shake is not a bad thing, but it won't give you the nutrients your body needs. I am a huge advocate for nutritional supplements as the average person's diet and food is of very poor quality.Hope this helpsDOM

  • my boyfriend has this same problem. he sawhis dermatologist and got propecia to prevent more hair loss and it seems to be working realy well. we can see new hair growth even. for the itching he has a foam that has to be massaged into the scalp everyday. we both use a magnetic shampoo from our local whole foods market and it has greatly improved the condition of both our hair and scalp. i have very brittle hair myself and used to have the same itching. i stopped scratching and it went away, but it was hard to stop. he can't do it.
