Hi

I was just wondering if someone could give me some information. My sister is annorexic, but now seeking help and trying hard to put on some weight (though she is struggling with this)

She went for blood tests which showed extremley low iron. She had to go to hospital where they told her she had High hemoglobin and so had to get more blood tests done.

They sent her to a cancer unit for her blood tests, so she got a little confused and upset, and so cant really remember much of what they said. ( she didnt tell us at the time about the appointment, as she thought it was just routine, so she was on her own)

Theydid mention, that it could be something too do with the bone marrow making more red blood cells than it should - does anyone know anything about this - or what it could be?

Google, brought up a condition called Polycythemia Vera, but I dont want to jump to any conclusions. I would appreciate any info advice anyone could give.

Thanks

  • Polycythemia is a blood disorder and people who have this have high count of hemoglobin and high in iron for sure that's why I am advised by my doctor not to avoid iron intake. Your sister needs further test. She needs to go either to an oncologist or hematologist and take Jak2 test by extracting a sample of bone marrow from her pelvic bone. See the proper specialist for this desease to clarify your minds.. It's a serious desease to just believe on hearsays

  • What ever you have written as the description of the decease about your sister is no doubt serious. First thing is do not allow her to go to the doctor alone since it will be possible that due to some tension she might miss some suggestions of the doctor regarding her problem. In the absence of any reports and health history of your sister, it will not be possible to predict what exactly might be the problem but you should see an oncologist in the regard for sure. It will be good to get the consultation and proceed further from some specialist.
