Anal lump

I have had a painful lump on the anus. It feels like a pea, like a little swollen gland. The doc did a rectal exam but couldn't come up with anything but a mild form of hemorrhoids. I have indeed some hemorrhoids, but this lump doesn't feel at all like swollen veins. My guess is that the doctor missed the lump altogether. Since I read that a lump COULD be a symptom of anal cancer, my questions are as follows:

Can this kind of lump be just a symptom of hemorrhoids?

Will it eventually go away? (how long should I wait before going back to the doc if the lump doesn't go away? )

Any other comments??
