hi... i was watching this show on channel 10 (australia) called "the truth about size 0" and it was addressing eating disorders saying that a BMI is classified as underweight... out of curiosity i calculated my BMI and according to my result im straddling severe anorexic/or just plain anorexic.
I am:
5 feet 1 inches
83 pounds
18 years old

im a size 00-0
more specifically,
bust: 30"
waist: 23"
hips: 32"

and my BMI = 15.6

but I don't look anorexic, I look 'skinny' but definitely anorexic... i eat quite alot, good proprtions of food. I honestly don't even excercise... but I cannot gain weight... I have been the same weight for 4 years... I have a healthy attitude to eating (i.e. minimal junk food... although i do indulge in it occasionaly) I have lots of carbs and protein... although I don't eat seafood and i don't drink dairy milk, just soy.... Am I anorexic?

  • Anorexic's don't eat - My sister nearly died when we were teenagers from anorexia. If you eat 3 good meals a day you aren't an anorexic and don't feel bad about your weight - i have a 5'11" 16 year old son who eats a lot, and weighs a little over 100. I was told he has a good metabolism but he also never stops running either so i'm sure he's burning it off...

  • No, you can't have anorexia nervosa with such a healthy attitude towards eating as you seem to have. The fact that you have maintained your weight for the past four years means that you are just naturally thin, (lucky!) and therefore shouldn't suffer many side effects from having such a low bmi -as i'm sure the programme highlighted, subsequently developing your worries. If you had drastically cut your calorie intake in order to decrease your weight to 83lbs in a short space of time, and still believed yourself to be fat regardless of the weightloss, this would be more fitting with anorexia. You may also suffer from the loss of your periods, low energy levels, depression, confusion, extreme sensitivity to cold etc. also obssessive weighing of yourself, measuring yourself, extreme exercise routines, frequent fasting etc.. all to maintain your weight. However, even if you are eating properly, and have a healthy balanced diet, if you suffer from any of the above symptoms (coldness etc), then that may be due to your low weight, but not due to an eating disorder.hope that makes sense, and helps you at all :)

Am I anorexic?Hmmm I don't think soI am 5'3' and I am 113lb. I have tiny tiny bones- tiny wrist and hands...even when I have been much bigger, my wrist and arms stay tiny.I guess the real question is: are you underweight? are you anemic? do you have enegy?Don't let people who don't know you call you anorexic. If you are really avoiding food not to displease your image, then you need to correct that bad habit. But if you don't think about your size or look when you eat, you don't call yourself anorexic- specially if you get all the minerals and goodies that your heart needs.People are so used to people overweigth, they forget how humans used to have flexible, agile bodies in the past :). I am slender, but I don't look underweight... sometimes one has to see the whole person flesh and bone to say if it is the ideal weight.I personally avoid milk and milk products because very good research shows how milk is not all that good. I do eat everything else. I cook everyday- and I have energy.Oh well, have a great day,Ciao!

My BMI is 15.6, and I do virtually no exercise and eat so much junk food, yet some stupid website is telling me to see a healthcare provider for further assessment to determine possible causes of underweight. Should I be worried?
