Based on my own experience, it’s best to see or get copies of your tests and results, especially for any ER visits. I’ve found numerous mistakes and omissions in my records including:

The ER sent my ECG results to an OB-GYN instead of the cardiologist they referred me to (they had similar last names), so the cardiologist never saw my ECG.

Another ER’s blood test results didn’t get to my primary care provider (even though the hospital file says they were faxed), so my doctor never saw my abnormal test results. I never knew they were abnormal until I paid for my own copies.

These mistakes meant many months of unneeded suffering while waiting to get diagnosed. If you can’t pay for your own records, at least ask to look through your file to make sure everything is in there.
