Hello, New to this forum and glad to meet you all.

I am a 38 year old Smoking Housewife with no medical insurance, about 180 pounds....have gained about 30 pounds since starting work on the computer 3 years ago, and dont get alot of physical exercise, so I am in an upright posistion alot of days and of course bending forward with not so great posture.

Other than generalized getting older and general aches and pains Im healthy.

I have had SEVERE bouts of pain on my left side, just beneath my rib cage in the stomach area, for about 7 years.

The pain isn't always present, it comes and goes but I never have it when im standing or laying down (only when Im sitting) , It can be brought on sometimes by coughing or even twisting/bending my body to the left ,right or foreward, doing sit ups, getting out of bed or for no apparent reason at all, but not every time, and I cant reproduce the pain for the doctor.

Severity of the pain...UNBELIEVABLE !!! On a scale of 1-10 it is always a 8-9 during the episode.
It almost feels like a charlie horse in my stomach, or severe labor pains but ALWAYS in the same spot ..I can put my finger on it every time..It's the same exact spot.
No chance that Im pregnant Ive had a tubal 15 years ago, and as mentioned this has been ongoing for about 7 years.
The muscles in my stomach area completely contract and I cant hardley breath in or out untill it passes.
It lasts about 30 seconds and then stops leaving a sore, bruised feeling for an hour or so in that area.

I can apply pressure with my hand to the spot and be very still or lay down as I feel the muscles begin to contract and that will usually delay or stop the full blown spasm for awhile or a day.
There's no bruising, I cant feel any lumps, it used to only happen about once a month ( sometimes It wouldnt happen for 3-6 months) but recently it has been more frequent happening 1-2 times per week.

It doesnt cause fever, and im not dibilitated except when im having the pain.
I am constipated and gassey quite often ( I think I should be going more than I do),I get indigestion often but hardley ever have diarhea.
These dont feel like gas pains, they are extremely more severe than that.
I dont loose my appetite,I dont take laxitives because I hate the stomach ache produced by them.

The only meds I take are Advil or aleve for pain ,claritin for allergies and Nyquil when I have a cold.

I also occasionally get a burning achey feeling in my back, towards the top between my shoulder blades, it's a radiating ache no more severe on one side than the other, but occasionally radiates up the right side of my neck ... usually brought on during colder weather or times when im stressed or smoking more than usuall , I thought it comes from my lungs and was a URI but my general physician always says my lungs sound fine, so maybe it is coming from muscles ?
I might add, taking Nyquil seems to help the pain between my shoulder blades.

I have brought these pains to the attention of my general physician for years and she looks at me as though she's puzzled so I stopped even bringing it up to her because she makes me feel stupid, I am not a hypochondriac .

7 Years ago she put me on anti-depressants after my 5 - 6 th complaint about these pains , I assumed she was thinking that I was too stressed and freaking myself out , I stopped taking them after the first 6 months or year because the pains didnt stop and I didnt feel depressed even in the begining .
I dont take pain pills so I turned those down when they were offered and told her I dont want a band-aid , I want to know whats wrong.

She says it could be alot of things (possibly more than one thing) and I should have an MRI done but I cant afford that.

Any ideas?

  • You should check into nerve entrapment. I have a simular issue and have gotten treatment thru a Chiropractor who is woking on the soft tissue in my rib area. The nerves from your back pass thru your ribs and you soudn like you are having the same issues I am having. I have delt with this for 4 years and have seen many doctors. This is the first time in four years the pain is gone.

  • hi, i am a 38 year old female, i have intermittant upper left side pain. it feels as if someone has blown up a balloon in/under my left ribcage. the pain is usally best described as a burning, with pressure. the burning radiates thru to my back. i really cant remember when this all started, but i do know it seems to be gradually getting worse. i have noticed there seems to be a pattern. about a week before my period starts, i will start craving things like, tomatos with an unholy amount of salt, pickle juice, lemons with huge amounts of salt.ect. . by the next day i have the pressure, and pain. sometimes it lasts for 2 or 3 minutes, sometimes it lasts for hours. this goes on for days until i start my period, then seems to dissapate mostly, till the next month. i have had 23,000 dollars worth of heart test, my heart is fine, i have had a colonoscopy, nothing. i have had an upper GI, nothing. my blood tests always show slightly elevated white blood cells. i have had a catscan, nothing, i have had an MRI, nothing. i was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, when they could find nothing else. i am not a doctor, but i do know my body, and this is not IBS. my doctor now refers to me as his mystery patient. most months i can deal with the pain, but sometimes i just get very overwhelmed feeling, i dont understand why the doctors cant find out what it is. im at that point that i think we all get to, where we feel like we are just suppose to live with it and quit bugging the doctor, and im sorry, but that just isnt right.

  • I experience this under the rib cage, sometimes on the right, sometimes on the left and I have to do some deep breathing till it passes or it will hurt like a bruise for days.My guess, and I'm a pretty good guesser (I just diagnosed my own shingles with the help of google, of course :-))......is that it might be a hiatal hernia. I rushed to the hospital and got the antiviral pills which probably kept me from suffering more than I did.I asked a heart doctor about it and he said, Well, it's NOT your heart!I haven't really mentioned it to any other doctors since.I wish someone knew what it was. It's quite excruciating and worrisome.I have been experiencing this same pain since I had a c-section three years ago. I have wondered if the doctor placed my intestines back inside my body properly. The pain comes on my right side and is under my rib, toward the middle of my stomach. It usually occurs when I am bending at an odd angle, or reaching backward for something. The pain is just like a charlie horse in my calf, but in my stomach. I have actually felt the muscle, or what ever it is relax before with my hand. It is a very scary sensation. When it catches, I have to move around quickly to make the cramp relax and people look at me like I'm crazy because I can't breathe until it goes away. I will look up these answers and see what I think it is. I was scared it could be a tumor or something. Glad to know that there are others out here with the same symptoms.

(they know it is bad because others have called them- so don't let them try to deny it) Do not buy anything with that in the ingredients and you will get better - PROMISE. If you do not eat sucralose because you are already careful then tell me your diet and I will try to help = but first google ALL of your OTCs and your Pharma meds! for side effects! THanks and hope this helps :)

See if the timing of these symptoms correlate with a night of feasting on fatty foods like roast pig, ham hocks, ox tail or other fatty type food.I suffered for years because I was too dumb to go see a doctor until one day I was carted off tho the hospital where they removed my Gaul Bladder. I have never had the pain again, today they can extract it through two holes and the recovery was one week. If this is your problem, get it fixed and start living pain free again.

I have been experiencing the same chest pain from my c-section 3 1/2 years ago. Something else I am experiencing is after drinking a large amount of fluids, if I flex my stomach muscles, I can hear (along with anyone standing next to me) a sloshing noise from the left side of my abdomen. I also feel like my insides were not put back correctly. Does anyone know if that actually happens?

I have been trying to "track" when this happens. I have been off of work for over a year and have NO insurance, am 60 yrs old. I haven't smoked for over 10 years. I have been under stress and did take lexapro for 6 months or so, but, have been off of that for over a year as well. I had my first attack in the car when reaching over from the driver seat to the floorboard of the passenger seat to grab my handbag. The pain was SO SERVERE it was horrific. It was like a giant LEG CRAMP but up under my right side of my rib cage and took my breath away. I get very panicked but try to mentally stay calm and TELL IT to go away and relax......some attacks are worse than others. I tried to exercise yesterday and bent down and reached forward to the floor and WHAM it hit me. I have taken ADVIL for over 20 years only occasionally.......but do not think that is the problem. I am thinking more towards a hernia or a cycst or maybe even my panceas or could it be endrometiasis????sp......if you find out what it is please post so I can see if that is what is going on with me. This is the weirdest pain I have ever had. Yesterday's attack has left me very sore even through today. Tonight I can't sleep and was trying to read online about what this pain could possibly be coming from. I find that if I drink alot of water it helps.....I enjoyed a beer today at lunch with my son and it seemed to have aggravated it tremendously.....so I drank a ton of water immedately.

  • Hi EveryoneSo reassuring to hear that i'm not the only one with the same problem!! Mine started when I was young but has been worse over the last 10yrs since giving birth to my 1st daughter. The symptom is usually onset after bending over / doing sit ups etc. It feels extremely painful and is very localized to a particular area under my left rib. It feel like a muscle spasm and when you think it it getting better it feels like a muscle 'untwisting' often 'unpopping'. It can last a few minutes but usually comes back straight away. I walk around like a looney with my fingers pressed tightly under my ribs stretching upwards. I occasionally feel v light headed, dizzy and feel as though I will pass out (a symptom that no one else has mentioned in this forum). Sometimes it can come on & off intermittently for almost an hour! It's horrible & yes v scarey. I have found drinking lots of water helps when I have an 'attack' and 'trying to break wind' (!). I have also found that it is worse when my diet is poor & I have gained a little abdominal fat eg eating lots of cakes/biscuits etc. My last attack was in May. I have been careful with my eating since & careful not to eat too many carbs which tends to make you feel more bloated. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has found a relationship between weight (abdo) and these 'attacks'. Also today I went to see a Gastroenterologist (after much persuasion to my GP who wanted to give me steroids or antacids! like Gaviscon) - The Gastro said it was 'Rib Tip Syndrome' - Having googled this I am not entirely sure but would interested to hear other's opinions. PS I am a 40yr old female - my dad also has this so i'm wondering if it hereditary.

  • I have had the same pains over several years. Sometimes it is painful in the middle of my back closer to the left side near the rib cage. Other times I feel it either in the center of my abdomen, starting from the breastplate area down towards an beneath the stomach. I self-dignosed myself with gallstones 6 years ago. I did the Hulda Clark 'cleanse'. It had appeared to work. I was 54 then. For most of my life I have used olive oil, rarely oleo. I eat lots of salads and other vegs. I eat fish, shellfish or chicken most of the time. I do love pasta and cheese though. I have become lactose intolerant so I use lactiad for any ice cream, which is rare. I am 5'10", female and only weigh 135 lbs, 60 now but a former athlete. Six years later, I assumed I had another gallstones attack. I did the "cleanse" again. Got rid of a lot of gallstones. Now, I have the same back 'aches' in the middle to left center under the rib cage. I will admit I never drank enough fluids, that has changed now. But I have been drinking a lot of apple juice and water for about a week. We'll see what happens. But this ache has been here for 2 days off and on after the "cleanse" and after drinking a lot of fluids for a week. Would love to know more. Good luck everyone.

    8 Surprising Facts About Cholesterol

Did you know that one in six US adults has high cholesterol?

  • I am going to say that the symptoms are interesting in that they help one decide what it may be but truly after localizing the issue - the detail should be on the DIET. Almost every problem a person has is the FOOD they are eating and the food one DOES not eat. Are you eating sucralose /splenda?If you are your complaint is typical of 1/3 of the users- why one third? Because just like we are all different we all react differently to the same poison- yes, sucralose/ splenda is a poison and you can read all about it in a book called "SPLENDA: IS IT SAFE OR NOT?" written by haz mat engineer and chemist JS Hull. You may not be eating splenda per se but look at your labels and see if it is in some of your fav foods. It is extremely addictive as well this is why it is not just in diet/diabetic foods anymore. Everyone is using it -in combination with sugar now- because the discovery of its addictiveness gives it one more quality: it gives the product longevity. That would also explain your weight gain- because it teases the body with sugar it is not getting- it makes your brain want to eat more.BUT what is worse is that it is shrinking your spleen- by as much as 45%.And your thyroid or Lymph gland. The two are directly related to the health of your immune system! YOU need to read your labels and find foods with out either aspartame or sucralose ( good luck as the food chain of grocery products have 9,000 and 6,000 products respectively with these two products)You should also ditch anything with: Hydrogenated oils (also in every processed food out there including margarine!) Why? Because it is plastic. While we are on the topic of plastic- ditch the microwave because it deforms your enzymes and proteins so you can not eat them /assimilate them for use!Ditch the hormonal meat and dairy- buy at places like Whole Foods (meat)and anywhere the Organic milk. Buy a juicerator- Waring is good and start drinking your juices:CARROTBEETSCELERYand also bake with the pulp of the above or make soups ( celery)use agave or stevia as sweeteners. (nothing else)and you may want to start the whole diet off with a applecider vinegar, honey, maple syrup (without sucralose in it) fast- meaning this is all you drink for several days or even one day if you can't take more. You could also buy a 5 day nutritive cleanse from www.youngliving.org/gil site under nutritional supplements tab. But what you are doing with all of the above is cleansing- YOU will not get better until you start eating REAL foods- and ditch the poisons and plastic foods- stop eating cheap filler and start eating natural simple foods rich in digestive enzymes ( which will allow your body the ability to metabolize the lipids in your body)it takes discipline- not pharma to get healthy. :) hope this helped- (exercise helps too= things that are not strenuous and very uplifting=yoga. (AM Yoga DVD from Rodney Yee, for example)relaxing and beneficial to the circulatory system. If you want more natural ways to combat issues go to www.youRno1.org. pay for the GOOD stuff- (food and natural remedies) so you can be healthy and happy- vs. buy LOTS of trash and be sick all of the time and spend more on Dr. and more food that does not satisfy the body. (when you eat REAL food you are never hungry, when you eat trash you are craving food all day because your body is starving for the real food it is not getting. )Same goes with super foods- that eliminate symptoms- it is pricey but you use less and don't have the issue anymore- when you use pharma the original problem never goes away and you buy more and more of the ibuprofen because you are still sick.

  • I have been experiencing this same pain since I had a c-section three years ago. Glad to know that there are others out here with the same symptoms.I have the EXACT same sensation, and it also started after my c-section 2 years ago. I had thought the same thing, that maybe they put my intestines back wrong, or severed some kind of muscle that didn't heal correctly. I would like to have another baby, but I am petrified that I will have this feeling on a constant basis throughout pregnancy. It's such a scary sensation, like your insides are going to burst out. Have you had any other children since? Have you been able to find out the cause of it? It's so intense sometime that my ears start to ring, like I'm going to pass out, but it wont go away unless I relax, which seems almost impossible at the time it's happening

  • I'm a 21 yr. Old male and I am experiencing the same symptoms I read. It started about a month ago I might just be sitting playing the video game and when I would lean forward I would notice I got a Charlie horse sensation going through my upper body. It would go away after about 10 seconds. They it start happening when would be getting out of bed. I thought it was just a one time thing but its definitely worsening now it travel through my left arm its feel extremely numb and hard for me to breathe. This is beginning to make me panic the way it feels I know thus can't be healthy nor safe.

  • Did you have your tubes tied or do you have filshi clips ? If you have clips of any type on your filopian tubes, it's possible one could've come loose and migrated in that area. You should see an internal medicine Doctor and have bloodwork done to check for infection, check liver enzymes, kidneys...etc.... I felt the same way and my bloodwork was good except my H.Pylori count was high in the 60s. I never even heard of H.Pylori before until my Internal Specialist called me in for a follow up on my blood work. H.Pylori is a stomach infection and is generally treated with antibiotic therapy such as Prev Pack which consists of Previcid, Biaxin and amoxacillin. Most everyone has it apparently, just some people have lower counts from 30 or below. Anything higher than 30 is a sign of infection in the stomach. Alot of people with ulcer problems have a high count and don't even know it! Family practice doctors just treat the person for the ulcer pains and check your blood for chol.,sugar, thyroid etc... which also is a good thing also. H.Pylori apparently comes from the foods we eat. Stay away from Buffet Restaurants where everyone puts their hands in the food.If you are really concerned, See an internal specialist :) Hope that helps. Good luck:) Shelly>not sure if this helps or not, but both my sister and i, tend to suffer with it. if the pain is contracting....really bad and then eases....within several seconds, and then contracts again and is consistent...it could be abdominal spasms. the spasms are caused by a very large gas bubble that you can't release. not sure if you've noticed that maybe the next day you may release a lot of gas. not sure what the cause is...but i tend to think that stress is involved in some way. i don't get them often...maybe twice a year...but they are extremely painful. went to the hospital a few times for it, but now that i know what it is....i just take 3 tylenol and a product that has some kind of gas relief, like gaviscon. the tylenol helps with the spasm and the gaviscon eventually works on breaking up the gas bubble.

  • [I have been having the same pain for a few years now. It happens especially during stomach excercises (stomach crunches). Feels like my insides are being twisted into a pretzel. Anyone know the reason for this and how to relieve pain?

  • Maybe it is a long turd. Not a big round one, but a long, thin one. If I've eaten a lot of little stuff over a long period of time (as opposed to a whole lot in a short time), I get the same thing. Your intestines make about a ninety degree turn right there under your right rib cage. The intestines come across the body and make a sharp turn and head down to the poop shoot. If the turd is long, it will not navigate the corner well.Eat less and give your digestive system time to close off one turd before the next begins.

  • It sounds like an ulcer to me, get prilosec OTC and start chewing tums. You should feel pretty quick relief from the tums the prilosec takes a few days to start helping. I had the same type of pain and this is what the Dr. Told me to do. Goodluck!

  • hi, i am a 38 year old female, i have intermittant upper left side pain. it feels as if someone has blown up a balloon in/under my left ribcage. the pain is usally best described as a burning, with pressure. the burning radiates thru to my back. i really cant remember when this all started, but i do know it seems to be gradually getting worse. i have noticed there seems to be a pattern. about a week before my period starts, i will start craving things like, tomatos with an unholy amount of salt, pickle juice, lemons with huge amounts of salt.ect. . by the next day i have the pressure, and pain. sometimes it lasts for 2 or 3 minutes, sometimes it lasts for hours. this goes on for days until i start my period, then seems to dissapate mostly, till the next month. i have had 23,000 dollars worth of heart test, my heart is fine, i have had a colonoscopy, nothing. i have had an upper GI, nothing. my blood tests always show slightly elevated white blood cells. i have had a catscan, nothing, i have had an MRI, nothing. i was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, when they could find nothing else. i am not a doctor, but i do know my body, and this is not IBS. my doctor now refers to me as his mystery patient. most months i can deal with the pain, but sometimes i just get very overwhelmed feeling, i dont understand why the doctors cant find out what it is. im at that point that i think we all get to, where we feel like we are just suppose to live with it and quit bugging the doctor, and im sorry, but that just isnt right.Hello I hope you or someone else with your condition reads this. I am 20 years old and I have been living with a condition similar to what you have described for my entire life. I call them by back ache-stomach aches. They always occur on my left side and the pain is excruciating. The pain can last between minutes to hours. I don't think I ever associated it with my period though. I can usually always feel the pressure on my left side and during an attack I usually have to contort my body to find a position that is more comfortable. It does not matter what I eat or when I eat, I am just tired of dealing with this. During an attack it even hurts to breathe. If you are out there or have information on a possible diagnosis, please contact me, I am really tried of living with this pain. I have been checked for kidney stones and it is not that and I use the bathroom regularly.

  • If this is the same thing that I have had and my son as well, it almost could be feeling like a heart attack. Clinching feeling, spasms... I was told when I took my son to the E.R. for his that it is inflamation between the ribs. or , excuse the spelling if it is incorrect, "costiochondritis" You just take NSAID medicines for this, aka... Aleve, Advil, any kind of Ibuprofen medication. This helps with inflamation. When I have mine it is always on the left side at the very top of my rib cage and it contracts and clinches like spasms.. hurts and yes you feel sore afterwards. You might ask your Dr. about this to see if this is what could be happening to you. Sounds like it to me. Good luck!
