abdominal pain/left side

I have been experiencing abdominal pain on my left side for over a month. The pain is mostly located in the upper left part of my abdomen, near or just underneath my rib cage. The pain is fairly minor, although, it is continuous, and increases in severity throughout the day.

I visited a doctor three weeks ago, and the urine analysis was negative. The doctor thought the problem was a muscle strain or an infection that could be resolved with rest and a juice diet. Neither of these prescriptions have improved the discomfort.

Please help with any possible advice or information. Thank you.

  • I just posted my symptoms a few minutes ago and noticed your's is the exact same as mine. I have no idea how to get rid of this. I'm thinking of going to the doctor on Monday to figure something out! That's creepy cuz everyone I've talked to have never heard of something like this before.

  • I have something like this too; a poking feeling on the left side and also a little larger abdomen (everyone thinks I'm pregnant), but I'm not. I don't have any diagnosis for anything but have had HBP in the past. I had an ALT test upon my request, and it came back ok (low). I had an "exam" and all say I'm find - they sent me to an ultrasound - and I need to get the results. I can tell you that we have had mold in our house (last February) - in our bedroom and had it professionally removed; we probably have more judging from the home test I did on Saturday a week ago: there are about 35 spores growing once it was placed into a ziplock, while the outside test grew nothing. My kids are coughing too. We were all wheezing last Spring, but that might have also been a virus (a bad one has been going around). We also have occasional eye infections though my kids are in daycare too.Hmmm.... will check back later.

  • This is the exact same with me, however my ultrasound came back with nothing and I still have the pain. If you get a diagnosis it would be great to know!

  • I have had this pain (left abdominal) for a few years. Three years ago I had a hysterectomy because of over grown cysts in my uterus, excessive bleeding and pain. The doctor told me then that it was wierd that I felt so much pain on my left side because the ovary on my right side was worse. After a few months I expected the pain to go away...it didn't. This summer over the 4th of July weekend I stayed in bed buckled up in pain. I knew it was the cysts on my ovaries messing with me again, so I made my plans for surgery to remove them! I had surgery mid-September and had them both removed. My doctor told me that she was suprise that I had so much pain on my left side because my right side was so much worse. Again? Huumm...pain transferance? Maybe...I had one ovary stuck to my intestine and the other stuck to me pelvic. Eight weeks after surgery I still have quite a bit of LEFT abdominal pain so my doctor sends me for a CAT scan to see whats going on. The results were not what I expected. I was told that I have cysts on my pancreas, cysts on my bladder, pockets growing on the outside of my colon and athritis in my spine! Wow! What now? I did some on-line research and found that the cysts on my pancreas are what are probably causing the pain on my left side and maybe they have been there all this time.I go to the doctor tomorrow so that they can send me to a specialist and we will see how they want to treat this.

  • I´ve had those very same symptoms for about 4 months now, I´ve only had chest and abdomen x-rays and nothing showed up, the doctor I´m seeing said it could be muscle pains or such things but I´m convinced it´s something else, it feels like something is pushing from the inside of my ribcage sometimes. Did any of you who had the pancreatic cysts experience any problems with blood sugar? because the pain started around the same time I started having blood sugar problems and eventually diagnosed with diabetes, I don´t know if both things have something to do with each other though.

  • Well, back in May I was feeling really sluggish and my pain wouldn't go away. I went to my primary doctor and she had blood drawn for a complete panel test. She said that my sugar level was border line high as was my cholestoral. (the bad one) Six months earlier everything had been normal. I was suppose to go back for a second set of blood test to compare to the first, but that's when I decided to go for surgery to remove my ovaries (thinking that this would take care of the pain) and never did go back. The doc that performed my surgery is a specialist in another city and since she had to draw blood as well, I just figured that she would tell me if there was something out of the ordinary. Actually I had blood drawn at the same time I went for my CAT scan and she said that was all normal. So, I guess I really don't know. However, I remember a few years back that my dad had severe abdominal pain. It turned out that he had a ball of staff infection under his belly button that they had to cut out - he was diagnosed with diabetes at that time.

  • Yeah, at the beginning they said it was borderline, my sugar levels weren't as high as to be diagnosed with diabetes but they were still not normal and eventually it got worse and that's when I was diagnosed. I will talk to a diabetes center and mention the pain, maybe they will know better than my current doctor, I wouldn't be surprised if these two things are related.

  • Its great to actually find a forum with people in my boat! This pain started for me over 6 months ago and wasn't severe at all but then it went away. 2 months ago the pain came back and my period went from nonexistent to rediculously bad. Everything else has been normal except for the occasional rise in temperature (no fevers) and major fatigue. When i first went to my pediatrician over 6 months ago she (not my normal dr) dismissed it as acid reflux which i thought was completely stupid so i didn't take the acid reflux pills. The second time i went which was a week ago my actual pediatrician felt around and said my lymph nodes on my neck were swollen which i didn't notice at all. She said she would do a urine test to see if that looked fine and dismissed the entire thing as a "Swollen gland" and to watch it.So on this monday i got referred by my mom to her dr at the hospital because hes one of those drs that listens to you and gets things done. So i told him my medical history with illnesses and he felt around and said that a blood test would be needed and since i already took a urine test that i didnt have to again. He weighed me and not even a week ago i weighed 140 and suddenly i weighed 136. (the week before weighed in the morning, this time in the afternoon so its not a weigh less in the morning type of thing) I decided to take the urine test just in case. I got my blood tested for i think pancreas, liver, and kidneys. My doctor said nothing really stood out other than the fact that my sugar was high at 124 i believe. but i did have mcdonalds before the appt. The urine apparently had bacteria in it and apparently a UTi which i didnt feel at all so im on antibiotics for that. The next morning (today) i had a scheduled ultrasound. I took the antibiotics starting last night and when i woke up in the morning the pain seemed to be worse and radiated about to the middle and a little lower down. Im currently waiting on the results of the ultrasound right now and going crazy. Im worried that i wont get a clear diagnoses of whats causing this pain. I hope they got some good pictures of everything.I know its not a kidney infection because the pain doesnt radiate to the back like it did when i had one prior and gallbladder problems run in my family. I tested for pregnancy to make sure it wasnt ectopic. I just find myself at a loss of answers and hopefully my experience with this pain will help someone and push them to get more tests done at the dr. Any opinions on all this? Has it helped? Possibly help me? And i'll be sure to post my results of the ultrasound and if nothing then well see how the antibotics work. The pain has gotten so bad i cant move without hurting it. Makes me wonder what organ or what it could be!

  • Really? Wow was it right under your rib cage or to the side of it? because thats where mine is. I had the ultrasound this morning and when she pushed down with the transducer it actually caused some slight discomfort on the right side and major on the left side. My spleen would be right there but my dr. looked over the not finished report quickly and said that my spleen was fine. He put me on medication for a UTI since i have bacteria or something in my urine and i'm waiting for the results which will hopefully be tomorrow. I thought it was my spleen but gallbladder or kidney sound more like what it could be just opposite side symptoms. its so weird how the pain can be on the wrong side like that. thanks for your information but sorry you had to go through with that!Any new good or bad ill be able to just take my stress away with fireworks on the 4th of july so it works. my grandmother and my mom both had their gallbladders out and problems with it my mom had it a little bit older than i am now. and my grandfather had kidney stones. other than that who knows what it could be. i read somewhere and some girl had an ovarian cyst which was like 5mm so i guess that explains the pain so high up.

  • I have also had pain in my left side for a few years. It would come and go, but just at the beginning of this year it has gotten really bad. I went to two regular doctors who didn't know what it was. My first doctor sent me to a gastro who tried to convince me it was heartburn and gave me medicine for that. I tried it for a while, but of course, it was not heartburn. I then went to another doctor and had a workup- blood work, x-ray, 2 CT's, etc. She again referred me to another gastro- I just saw the new gastro and they want me to get an endoscopy as well as a colonoscopy at the same time. If I get an answer, I will be sure to publish- but would like to hear what other people find out as well.I have been experiencing abdominal pain on my left side for over a month. The pain is mostly located in the upper left part of my abdomen, near or just underneath my rib cage.
