Hi there,

I first went to the doctor with back pressure on the right side of my spine, then after an ultrasound, found a fair amount of abdominal fluid, by belly is bloated, swells with food and now pain & sometimes minor cramping. I have fatigue and no energy, my bowels change from day to day, sometime diarrhea, then a couple days later constipation, and then some pencil like stools. I am 51 years of age and had not had regular periods for the last couple of years. I had not had one since summer then all of a sudden I had break through bleeding that only lasted a day. It was very different than my other periods. I have now had 3 ultrasounds and a CT scan. The organs look normal. I still have some abdominal fluid, but it is going down in volume. I am more and more bloated than when this first began 3 months ago. I feel like I am 4 months pregnant although I know I'm not. The only kind of cancer in the family is colon cancer but I have been having colonscopies every 4 years for that and this is so different than I have ever had. Some of the symptoms are consistant with ovarian cancer, but the organ look normal on a ultrasound and CT scan. The abdominal fluid is going down slowly.

Could someone help me figure out what I might have?

Thank you so much as now I am getting worried.

  • My first thought was ovarian cancer, I have seen the bloated belly, change in bowel movements/ constipation with ovarian cancer. Usually it is when the abdomen bloats up is when people find out. But you say you had a ct of the abdomen? What exactly did you have ct. Did you have any other tests? Exactly where in the abdomen is this "fluid" Above your belly button or below. Is your abdomen firm or soft does it have any sore spots that hurt if someone is pressing on your abdomen? Of course it could be IBS or maybe even a problem with the gallbladder. Or many other things.

  • Sorry I didn't answer sooner. This went to my spam file. Thanks for Responding Unregistered person... Sorry don't know your name. The CT scan showed all the organs in the abdominal cavity that look normal. The fluid is below my belly button, in the pelvis area and in the CT scan showed that some pooled in the "Pouch of Douglas". My abdomen is soft if I don't eat and when I do, I get filled fast and it bloated harder. I had a lot of pressure when the fluid was really high in Oct. but I just had another ultrasound last Monday (after all the pain on the weekend) and it showed less fluid than in Oct. and Nov. My abdomen is tender to touch on the right side and also in the middle just below my belly button. It might be because of the bloating and pain on the weekend that blew my abdomen to a hard and very uncomfortable size (like I was 4 month pregnant) and hard. Last Friday I was bleeding. Not sure if my period or abnormal bleeding because I'm 51 and my periods have been on and off for about 2 years now. It wasn't like the normal period for me and I hadn't had one since the summer. It's all so confusing and scary as my body hasn't had this happen. Thanks again and if anyone has anymore thoughts, please let me know.Foxette

I had posted this on WrongDiagnosis a few years ago now. The Gyneo went in with a laproscopy and saw it wasn't ovarian cancer like he first thought it might be. My stomach was bloating as there was free fluid in between my organs. There was so much that I think it pooled in my back at night giving me pain. This could be a sign of ovarian cancer having free fluid, but in my case it was blood (free fluid) from a huge ovarian cyst that burst. He took out the remainder of the cyst and another one that was also growing. All this was done by laproscopy so no huge cuts in my stomach to deal with. Only 2 holes...one in the bellybutton and one near the pubic bone. The fluid was sucked out and the remainder of the blood/fluid was absorbed by the body naturally. I was very relieved that I did not have ovarian cancer. As for meds, I wasn't given anything for this problem. I do have osteoporosis and Multiple Sclerosis and now Asthma so on a lot of meds for those things. I was in my early 50's when I had this bloating and ovarian cancer scare. Good luck and see if your doctor will send you for an ultrasound of your abdomen so see if you have anything wrong or free fluid and then take it from there. Because they found the free fluid with me, then they did a CT scan, MRI and then went in with the laproscopy. Good luck to you.Foxette
