I am 20 years old, for awhile now I have been experiencing very weird symptoms. I used to think that no one else had them, until I found out that a friend from work has them too. Although I think that my symptoms are much more cronic than hers. I tend to get abdominal discomfort, the left side of my abdomen tends to swell and thats when I start to hear my stomach to what I like to call 'growl'. I dont know why it does it and I feel very embarrassed. I used to think that maybe someday it would go away, but its not going away as a matter of fact I think that it is getting worse. Sometimes the 'growling' comes from the upper middle part of my stomach. What is most embarrassing is that its loud. Another thing is that I can't concentrate at work. I didn't want to admit it, but I think I have digestive problems. I used to feel worthless when I was younger until I realized that this is not my fault, I DIDN'T ASK FOR THIS. I know what some of you are thinking....how bad could this be? Just think of yourself in the middle of a meeting and then suddenly without expecting it, your stomach makes weird sounds, how embarassing could this be right? Can anyone please tell me if you have any of these symptoms? Could anyone please point me in any direction where I can research? I would really appreciate it.

  • I have always had a very loud stomache also. It doesn't bother me so much with the noise, but the pain and other symptoms are what upset my social life. I have left sided pain as well. Mine is accompanied by some other things, like diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, headache, and other problems. Doctors say it is irritable bowel syndrome. Good luck trying to figure out what's going on- I am still trying with mine.

I used to think that it was IBS too, but I have been researching and I only have some of the symptoms, I dont have diarrea and my abdominal discomfort is rarely pain its more like I can feel my intestines move, sometimes its much more cronic than other times. The reason why the loudness of my stomach bugs me is because I work in an office (its always really quiet) and I even think that my boss has heard my stomach, shes really nice I think that she understands and doesnt say anything, I love my job but my stomach makes it really ******n me.

  • hey there, just read your message and i have equal sympathy. Im a medical student and when im in lectures its an absolute nightmare cos my intestines make the worst sounds!! its got to the point where im beggining to miss sessions and i really dont wan to be doing that. My GP tells me i have IBS but this is only a diagnosis of elimination and not something that should be dignosed at first glance!! although i do feel i have it. every person develops different symptoms and there is no one person who develpos the exact classic case. what you are describing does sound like IBS unfortunately. You have a hyperactive digestive system and so your intestines are churning on over time unfortunately. As you have mentioned this is a chronic problem but there are ways to minimise your symptoms.More conservative managment involves changing your diet to alot of fruit and veg. Try eat slowly and attempt not to gulp air (sounds easier than it is) as the air travels all the way down to the intestines where it makes the noise. Treatment on offer include antispasmoidics for the digetsive system- if you experience any pain and general pain relief. nothing much else. anxiety management or stress relief ideas are all of benefit. hope this limited info helps.

  • I had similar problems years ago that were rectified by a naturopath. I had a build up of waste matter on the lining of my large intestine on the left to such a degree that in two places it was causing blockage. I had bouts of the runs as this was my bodies attempt to get past the blockage. I also experienced frequently stitchs in the left side when I went for a walk. While laying on my back once my stomach developed a huge lump in the middle of my abdoman where the fluid waste was accumilating and then when I lay on my side it vanished as it gushed passed the obstruction. and yes my stomach was quite noisy at times. To rid myself of this annoyance I gave myself diahreah to clean out my entire intestine and then had the naturopath give me an intestive massage. Man that was so painful. Two hours or so later I passed hard lumps of stool. Ever since I have had not problems. All the best.Agape, searchingsam

  • Guys I do not know if this will help you but I ve been suffering from this embarassing problem too. I also have terrible stomach pain after every meal. But something that has helped me a lot, especially for the noise is probiotics. I take two capsules in the morning and after that I don t have any noise or at least not much. Of course, depends what you eat as well cause some foods make my stomach growl more than others but its about 90% effective. It really was a miricle for me cause this is something that bothers me a lot. However, it does not cure the symptomes. Once you don't take it anymore, the noise comes back. So i do suggest that you take probiotics but keep searching for the cause like I am doing. If anyone finds an answer to the real cause of this problem please tell me!

  • I am pharmacy student and all these symptoms definitely indicate IBS. I have the noises coming from the left side of my abdomen too...this is especially bothersome when I am taking my exams and I have my classmates sitting not even 2 feet away from me. I have my professor say that citrucel.. which has methylcellulose helps with IBS. it slows down the spasms. I havent tried it yet though. I am taking metamucil right now..causes gas but lessens the frequent constipation I suffer. I only take it before bed time because of the gas problem. for the noise problem I am still looking for answers. I have read drinking soda or antacids at the time of spasms and noise might stop the spasms... but that has not work for me. when I hear and feel the noise ... my body or stomach immediately tightens up..while i am feeling embarassed my whole body heats up too the point I start sweating.. I feel I have no control and the noises still continue....this indicates that IBS is really connected with anxiety and stress.
