I started taking Lovastatin in February, and also did some minor weightlifting and exercising at the time and noticed muscle weakness in my right leg, thought it was the treadmill, so still continued the medication a few more days, and stopped the treadmill -- still weakness. so was told to stop the medication.

from there, i've had a dull pain in my abdomen, and in lower back. then a stiff neck. they prescribed flexeril and developed twitching in the neck. gave me norflex (muscle relaxant) and my whole body was twitching. Two months later (mri's, spinal tap and emg -- all normal) and still have the abdominal muscle spasms every day. Put me on valium 2 mg 2x a day and now reducing it to one a day-- now spasms are so significant. I've stumped the neurologist.

Anybody have any thoughts? any advice will help!

MS can cause this. rare cases present with twitching and/or spasms. you might think that a clear MRI and lumbar puncture would rule out MS, but this is not always the case stiff neck is also present in a lot of MS patients as is muscle weakness MS like many other illnesses or disease have a trigger. did you strain a muscle while on the treadmill? or rip a muscle? these are common triggers for MS and it has many more triggers such as injury (stepping on a nail and things of that nature) any additional information would be great

I had a bout of what i thought was poison ivy in august and the skin rash finally went away in january -- so was thinking maybe lyme diseaseI'm a bit confused -- i thought a clear mri and spinal tap rules out MS. I even had an emg and that came out normal. Is there not a test for MS? cpk is normal, calcium normal, ra factor is normal, sedimention rate in normal The muscle relaxants just seemed to intensify my twitches and even created this sensation that blood was rising up my spine and caused all my extremities to feel very stiff and then i went into spasms all over my body (but that was from a combination of amitriptyline and norflex) I stopped taking all muscle relaxants. the valium 2x 2mg a day seemed to help but never completely went away but then now went to 1x a day and then also squated to pick something up -- had spasms all day long.stiff neck is pretty much gone, just these abdominal/back spasms.

  • I guess my last post did not post. Anyways, I thought that a negative mri and spinal tap and emg would eliminate ms. you've managed to really freak me out. my last symptom and ongoing is my abdominal spasms and the neck stiffness has just about disappeared. My neurologist is stumped cpk is normal, ra factor is normal, sedimentation rate is normal, magnesium and calcium normal as well. I had a bout of poison ivy last august and the rash finally cleared up this past january so was thinking lyme disease. I was a healthy 35 year old male in February and now this. They are slowly taking me off the valium of 2mg from 2x a day to once a day -- and also I squated to pick something up the other day and had massive spasms the entire day. I honestly don't know if I need a different kind of doctor or what to do. Any other info you need?

  • This sounds like lyme and some Co-infections. Send labs to igenex in ca. They are the only one that has the tests that are sensitive enough to detect. Also, certain bands are lyme specific, if those are positive (even if the test reads negative) you have lyme and seeing a llmd is recommended. They're the only ones that will treat it. Look at and talk to people in the groups for lyme. It's deadly and can present as bad as als.
