Hi, new here and have plenty of health issues myself. My reason for looking for help or at least someone who has experienced the same. My daughter has pretty severe pain in her right side (high) ribs that then moved more to her back. Deep breaths hurt, the emergency room though Pleurisy but the follow up doc is thinking no. He has not been very forth coming with info. Did xrays and mentioned MRI. There are times the pain is not so bad others she just cries.

some history
She tends to hold bowel movements

She has a sort of history with a little pain in her back, but she also clearly likes to be massaged so not sure how real it was.

I do not think she is backed up right now from lack of bowel movements

She has been doing a lot of practice for upcoming baseball (not right now since in such pain) but I wonder about a rig being out?

Pain is high, higher than liver so I am in hopes of it not being anything major but I am really terrified and feel so helpless.........

  • Can't hurt to have her evaluated by a chiropracter. A rib out of place can be painful, and would fit what you've described.I hope it turns out to be something simple.Shula

  • Thanks, Shula, for mentioning the possibility of it being a rib that is not moving correctly. As a chiropractor, I have seen a good number of patients with these types of complaints that did well when the rib or ribs were adjusted.

  • Ralph,Ever heard of the pain moving from the side to the back? Obviously a long shot but if you practice anywhere in OH I certainly would like to see you!

  • Well, I'm not Ralph, but referred pain can really move around, and ribs are notorious for referred pain. I've had that myself.Shula

  • that eases my mind at least some. Thanks for the reply. When you see your little girl in such pain, the doctor is order MRI's and Xrays you begin to think the worst........................I am an afibber triggered by anxiety so you can imagine what this is doing to me. take care

  • Getting anxious about this won't help either one of you. Put on a meditation recording or something, and breath your way back down. If there is something really wrong with her, she will need you calm. And if there is nothing big wrong, there is no reason to be anxious.Either way, the best thing you can do for her is learn to self-calm. But, you already know that. :)Shula

  • calm as can be when anywhere near her....................its at night, when alone etc I breakdown. You certainly are right, I would never let her see me like that and I am trying to keep her confidence up as well.

  • Randy - that can be a common presentation, due to the fact that the nerve travels along a shallow groove on the bottom of the rib. So the pain can be anywhere along the rib - the whole thing or only certain parts. Are you also in OH ? I rarely adjust patients anymore, as I primarily do something called EDS - electrodermal screening. It is a combo of chinese medicine and computerized tech. I do know a good number of DCs around the state, so if you want to forward where you are, perhaps we can refer you and your daughter to a practitioner that can evaluate and then possibly treat her.

  • Ralph, Yes in OH near Sandusky. Amazing you say you are into what you say you are. I have been looking into your field a bit for myself as well. Anywhere near Sandusky? • Randy, I am east of Columbus a bit. If you are interested in the EDS (now called BioMeridian Stress Assessment by many) perhaps I can hook you up with someone that may be in your area. If I say Sandusky to my 9 and 13 year old girls, you know they will shout"GREAT WOLF !" as we did spend a fe days there 16 months ago. They did not want to leave, shall we say.

That would be great Ralph! 9 and 13 are the age of my children and they too loved Great Wolf. Of course there is now Kalahari and their new expansion (the kids say much better), and the old standby that kids never tire of Cedar Point! Would you think if this issue with my Daughter was something like an organ, or God forbid Tumor/Cancer (which is our deepest fear) that the pain would wake her from sleeping? She really only seems to be in pain after she is sitting up and awake or trying to lay down and get comfortable. any way Ralph you have been most helpful. Do you know a Chiropractor in our area by the name of Dan White?

Did you know that one in six US adults has high cholesterol?

  • I had the same problem when my gall bladder started to shut down. I know that it is rare in children, but does sometimes happen at young ages. I did not have the heart burn or other symptoms until months later after the pain in my right side (under the ribs) and around to my back. Sometime the pain was dull, and sometime it was unbearable. Something to consider...

  • Medical Doc is saying xray results look like scoliosis but wants me to head off to another specialist....................may try chiropractic before that?

  • initial xray results that were called into us are suggesting scoliosis.............he wants us to see an Ortho for suggestions. I may try chriropractic before doing this?

  • Go for both, don't wait for one to do the other. They do not have to be mutually exclusive. It can take time to get in to see the ortho, and the only thing an ortho will do on an initial appointment, will be an evaluation. So no need to wait before getting things moving on finding a good one, and arranging the initial appointment. In the mean time, one can usually get in to a chiro right away. So if the chiro can do anything, it will be obvious before you go into the ortho, even if you called the ortho and the chiro both today. It is also important to find out why she might have scoliosis. (Oh, that would explain her wanting massages!) There are a variety of reasons, and some of them will have you monitoring her for other things. I hope that makes sense.Shula

  • OK Shula now you have me terrified! What else would I be monitoring for?
Anonymous 42789 Replies Flag this Response
  • Oh my goodness, BREATH!With any scoliosis, you want to look into connective tissue dissorders. Beyond that, I don't know. But any time there is a major thing gone askew, it is reasonable to ask where it came from, and is anything else associated with it, especially with children. So: ASK THE DOCTOR. :)Shula
