I am very concerned. My 26yo/w son began with a corneal abrasion from a child' s fingernail on 7/14/08. That healed and within a week the injury eroded. that healed. But since it has recurred 7 times, today being the worst occurrence. His opth. put a band aid contact lens in today, started him on doxycycline po bid, vigamox i gtt tid, lacrilube qhs, artificial tears qid & prn, and is to see him back in 2 days. My concern is the persistent reoccurance of the erosion with symptoms worsening each time. The opth. has had him on vit.c , lysine, and fish oil, lacrilube qhs as a standard care. My question is could there be an underlying infection or systemic disease that is causing this to reoccur? What systemic problems can cause this? Does Map-Dot-Dystrophy always occur in both eyes?

  • I don't have an answer for you other to suggest that you supplement the doctor's treatment with several good acupuncture treatments and see if that can heal that injury.

  • I've had similar problems with my eyes and the answer for me was thyroid disease. It affects your eyes by prolonging healing times and/or causing frequent eye infections. One of the conditions you can have is called thyroid eye disease which causes corneal ulcers among other symptoms. There's two types of thyroid disease, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Here's more information:http://www.freewebs.com/thyroid
