my 3 yr old son has had severe abdominal pain, bloating, diahrea and constipation for 6 months. he has been seen by every specialist we can find and the best hospitals within several hours of our home. every test they can think of have been run. he's negative for cystic fibrosis, enzyme deficiencies, celiac disease, intestinal cancer, brain tumor, leukemia....all the obvious ones and many more i cant really recall right now. we are losing hope. he doesn't eat and is going for his feeding tube in a few days. right now, he's hospitalzed, has been for a week, and they still have no clue. can anyone help?

  • The only other conditions with those symptoms that I can think of right now are: - Lactose Intolerance (Have you tried eliminating dairy from his diet?) (Here's an interesting and informative article on the troubling issues with milk, which can cause either diarrhea or constipation. I can imagine problems would be worse for kids b/c they have weaker immune systems and guts. http://www.care2.com/greenliving/skip-milk-5-reasons-why.html?page=2) - IBS (which is kind of vague, but could explain the GI irritability and shifts from diarrhea to constipation. Here's more info on that: http://www.ibsgroup.org/forums/)- Bacterial infection/overgrowth (Candida) in the gut (Does your son also experience fevers and/or fatigue?) (http://www.experiencelifemag.com/issues/january-february-2004/health-wellness/kicking-candida.html) If so, maybe look at probiotics for him to increase the good gut bacteria, and eliminate sugar and processed foods from his diet. - Ulcers

  • It could be Irritable bowel syndrome. There are 3 different kinds of IBS.. and in one you can get both constipation and diahearr. It could be also an issue with food intollerance of some kind and hence you may need to check foods one by one to try to find out what is doing it. A Naturopath may be helpful in this area. (I think there is also some food intollerance blood tests which can be done.. but the normal medical profession just check for allergies which are actually different to food intollerances). *Note with food intollerances, the reactions can happen to a food up to 48 hrs after having it. You could trial just one type food at day at a time, reinducing them, starting from simple things eg potatoes one day and then adding apples the next etc. Be aware of what he is drinking too... and any meds he may on as one can be reacting to those too. The pain the bloating and irritation has caused him from foods his system isnt handling.. may of given him a fear of eating. So he may also need some counselling (or family counselling done so you learn how to deal with him) if he's now also got a fear issue. best luck

  • i thank you for your suggestions but the doctors have already ruled out all of those conditions. they are as desperate as i am to figure this out. it's not that he won't eat but that he can't. he has so much abdominal pain, eating makes it unbearable for him. his feeding tube is being put in tomorrow. i just don't know what this could be and the last doctor told me i may have to deal with not ever knowing what is wrong with my son.

Never quit trying to find out as one day even if many years in the future, you will have the answer (and it's probably a simple one). My youngest child almost died when only 6 weeks old due to a mystery bleed (from her nose). I was told over a week later that they thought she'd lost one third of her blood and that she'd probably should of been given a transfusion.. Doctors couldnt work out what caused it and just believed it was a trauma of some kind (they called the police thinking we'd abused her). She only had wee little nostrils and they never further investigated as the bleeding had stopped by the time the ambulance got to the hospital (the bleeding had stopped her breathing completely so she had to be resusitated). After that one incident she was fine but then she had several scary bleeds during teens. Doctors didnt believe me how much she bled so werent concerned when i took her to the doctor.. (someone found her on side of road in a big pool of blood nearly passed out). It wasnt till 17 yrs after her original lifethreatening event did we found out the cause. She's missing skin covering over the blood vessels in her nose!!! (so the doctors then started to talk about a skin graphs to cover and protect the vessels). I think it is ridculous how they just tried to blame us as she nearly died, kept her in hopsital a week but never even looked up her nose with equipment as they said a blood nose couldnt bleed that much.. and then 17 yrs later realise she's at another risk of a haemorrage and why. To top it off.. my daughter was born with several serious birth defects. One would of thought that the hospital could of easily reaslied she may have others in other areas of her body, including inside her nose. Best luck.. one day you will know.

Insist that your doctor test or it ...it may save his life.

Insist on have them test for it ...it's not as rare as they think,

  • My nephew had the exact same symptoms around the same age and it ended up being a rare (evdiently not-so-rare) disease called Hirschsprung's disease. They took him to numerous physicians and specialists and no one could figure it out. I told my sister to insist that they test for this disease and low and behold that was it. If caught in time in will save his life. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hirschsprung's_disease I'll be praying for you and your baby ... Michael

They found she had a knot on her intsetines? which she must have had from birth. Thankfully she was diagnosed after a very long time, had surgery and was much better for some time. oddly now many years down the line she still has sharp pains in the same place. she's been checked out - and i think its just something she ll always have to deal with.
