my daughter is 13 months old and for a month has been exhibiting the following:
*exhaustion/lethargy (she sleeps ALL night long and MOST of the day) she's only awake for short periods of time.
*constant low fever. nothing too crazy, she gets fussy and really really warm=I give her some infant tylenol and the fever goes.

Last week she got diagnosed with a virus (stomach) and started vomiting. with the prior symptoms they checked her for diabetes (been really thirsty too) and it was negative. after four days she got better for two days, and she went right back to the tired, lethargic behavior.

ruled out (by docs and tests):
*anemia
*diabetes
*hypothyroid

she is NOT eating. she hasnt eaten hardly anything in a week and has lost a pound. she's not under weight. doctor wants to see her back in a week to check her weight.
She has a HIGH white blood cell count. suggesting infection or virus, but without any other virus symptoms (ie: diarrhea, vomiting etc) the white blood count is higher than it was last week when she had a virus.

any ideas? i have no IDEA what is wrong with my child but she's been sick for a month and neither of my kids has ever been really sick except the virus this past week.

  • Please make sure there are not any bruises in addition to the other things you mentioned. Then just to be safe make the doctor run a test for leukemia, just to make sure it is not. My niece insisted on the doctor running the blood work and sure enough it was positive. Thank GOD she did-- today her daughter is a healthly 12 year old cancer free. Please if nothing else, do not take no for an answer...God forbid it is positive there is so many different cures. But don't wait do it now. Even if the test was run a month ago, insist that it be run again...... PLEASE

  • i wondered that. if i should have her checked for leukemia. is the test a blood test?

  • I believe it is a blood test. Please if your doctor won't run the test again, find a hospital and have them do it. If you need any further information I will contact my niece in Florida for you and maybe she can guide you further. Please don't wait. You can always feel foolish later for being worried but at least you will have a piece of mind. I am only giving you what I would do as a mother of four.....Listen to your instincts.....

  • Have the docs taken a good look at her ears? Often ear infections have no other symptoms other than fever and poor eating. I would rule this out. Does she have any swollen lymph nodes? Sore throat? Mono seems very unlikely. I agree that she needs testing to rule out leukemia. When did she start drinking whole milk? Does she have regular bowel habits or is she constipated? What foods does she eat and is there any foods that she LOVES? Was there anything out of the ordinary that happened prior to her getting sick? Was she visiting anyone or were you traveling? Did you get a new pet or anything else unusual? Best wishesDOM

  • I was glad to hear from you, just stay strong and know that everything will be all right. How is your little one feeling, any improvement? I would write down everything you can remember that you did, ate or places you went with your little one. See if there is anything that you can pin point as to the onset of symptoms. I don't know if it it possible but maybe go to a children's hospital and see if you can get answers. I know sometimes with insurance it is very difficult to just do things. Some hospitals only take what you can afford and will not bill over that. Please do not feel uncomfortable about questioning your doctor. Unfortunately they are ruled all to often by the insurance and not the patience condition. Please keep updating, I have been checking everyday to see any updates from you. I have never check one of these sights out before the day I saw your message and I feel like there was a reason I was there....keeping writing sometimes support will help...
