HEAD PAIN -- It's not a headache, but does lead to them.

So, I've been looking around online for about 2 months now and have yet to find anyone who had gotten help for this, just wondering if anyone here has.

For 2 months I have had a PAIN on the top of my head (since then I now have 3 spots). They are all about the size of a quarter. The best way I can explain them is like being hit on the head with a sharp rock (yes, I know what that feels like.) These pains are constant... every waking moment, and without any pain management (one one has really helped) wakes me up at night too.

The pains usually led to headaches and then at times to migraines. Since I was diagnosed with migraines since I was 14 most doctors zoom in on that and start treatment for those. None of these has helped. MRI 9w/out contrast) and CT are normal.

No one I've talked with personally has known anything like this (so, I don't get much unasked for suggestions of what to do that will "take care of it"). Those online who I FINALLY found with the exact same conditions either still haven't got a diagnosis/treatments that's helped or haven't posted their great results.

Anyone here been through this? It's hard to get others/doctors to understand they are pains NOT HEADACHES to start off with. Yes, I get headaches, usually from the pains, but the pains are still there even without ANY headache.

I have an appointment at the Mayo Clinic, but that's at the end of October. My husband plans to take sleeping bags, because he says we're not leaving until they figure out what's wrong.

Any thoughts or experiences to share out there?

  • Hi,I have headaches ALL the time. I normally take Exedrine Migraine. But something is different about it tonite, it doesn't feel like a headache its a sharp pain in 2 spots in my head, and I'm very worried about it! This just started about an hour ago and all I can think is TUMOR! I'm afraid to go to bed. Ive had bad headaches for a long time and I'm only 20. I'm going to make a dr. appt tomorrow...actually today since its 12:30 in the morning because I'm afraid to go to sleep. What did they tell you might be causing it?

  • The neurologist I first went to (2 visits in 1 week) said since it wasn't a headache he was going to refer me to someone else. I decided not to take his referral because of many things that happened during those 2 visits. I figured if I didn't trust him, why should I trust a referral of his (someone I told the place of referral to let me know I probably decided well.) The pain of course continued. The ER doctors believed it wasn't just a headache; I have pains on my head. They were stumped, and were only able to help with temporary pain management until I got to another doctor. (But they did so much more than the neurologist probably even thought about. The GP I went to heard , "I was diagnosed with migraines at 14," and pretty much decided he knew everything else. He even said, "I see this all the time." But the problem here is that when I tried to tell him of 'the pain spots' I was stopped and told, "That's just a detail, and you're getting away from the main subject."I'll do my best to post any updates I may get as to a true reason, treatment that works....ANYTHING.I can tell you that staying up all night is not going to help. If the pain is that bad right now (and I believe it can be) and you can't get into a doctor soon, you may need to go to the ER. It's better to get a professional opinion/diagnosis than to just worry about it. Blessings to you.

  • :mad:Well, it's been a while and I want to do what I said I would and give any updates I may have. Well, that about does it..............I did just have my appointment at the Mayo clinic, but it was pretty much a waste of everyone's time. I was very hopeful before going, but now I'm VERY disappointed everyone's time was wasted. I didn't think the doctor was going to hear my current state and give me an exact diagnosis and the perfect treatment (oh, to dream). I was expecting some more questions, digging and.... I don't know just something better. Instead it was (and I quote), "I've never heard of these symptoms, so I don't know what it could be, or how to take care of it." I WAS AT THE MAYO CLINIC!!!! But, since he didn't know he didn't think anything, or anyone else was necessary. He told me to just keep doing what I'm doing! I'm not DOING anything that has helped!I'm usually a pretty positive person, but I'm just about to the point of giving up...but, then God sends my son along to give me a smile and hug, or my husband to give me a kiss. The doctor at the Mayo Clinic did finally give me another medication to try out. This only came about after my emotions got the better of me and I had an out burst. The new med is a daily one that is used to help with recurrent ice pick headaches. He thought maybe what I have started as those, but have transformed (I do have ice picks too.) We are supposed to know if the new med works after 6 days. I am on day 4. It's helped a tiny bit, but no more than anything else has. Saddest part right now..........Tonight the pains are really bad, and I'm pretty much at square one, if not even further. If I get to take any steps forward I'll post them.I realized the most help I've received was from a female ER PA. Not sure if any of those details are a clue to me....I think the female route may be the way to start looking.:D

  • Princess Momma, I just began researching on this site about a pain on the top of my head that I noticed a few days ago. It feels just like you described it ("like getting hit with a rock"). It's the weirdest thing. At first I thought maybe I had a sunburn but thats not possible, then I thought maybe one of my kids pulled my hair really really hard, but that didn't happen either. I don't have any headaches though, like you have. But I just wanted to share with you that I decided to think about what other way there was to describe it, and I thought, it is my head that hurts but it is more like my scalp. It's almost like I want to shave my hair in this one spot to see if there is any bruise or something on my head. Anyway, I just wanted to share that with you, because I noticed that on the wrong diagnosis site you can look up scalp pain and it has a lot of informaiton. I hope you get to the route of the problem and it gets better, Take care, crzkdsmom

  • I was searching around the web to try to find any new information on what might be causing my head pains. That's right....They are still there. For about a 1 1/2 months the pains seemed to calm down a bit, but for the past few weeks they have kicked back up. I thought since I was looking around this sight I'd give an update.... then I realized everything is pretty much still the same.Hope someone is doing better out there. I have been watching Mystery Diagnosis lately. Not because I'm hoping to see "myself" there (that would be great for many of us though!). I'm watching because it gives me hope that I can reach the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm also glad to see others get to theirs. If only more doctors would take the time to look outside the box of the general and usual. Maybe less of us would have need for these boards.

  • Wow I was using google to get some feedback on this same exact situation. I have the exact symptoms as you. I mean exactly as in identical. This is very scary. The pain just come from out of nowhere. Although it just throbs for a few moments, when it goes away, I seem to eventually get a full headache.

  • I really hope I don't jinx things by posting this, but I may actually be on the road to knowledge. I'm still trying new doctors to see if someone can figure this all out. In the mean time I cannot continue being in so much pain some days that I can barely function. So, today I had an appointment with a pain management specialist to help get me through. Well, instead he decided he was going to "get to the source of all this." He doesn't know what is wrong, but he wants to figure it out. I almost didn't go because I was so afraid of this appointment being like all the rest. So, tomorrow I go for a new/different set of blood tests and next week for a MRI on my neck & shoulders. (The MRI is just to be sure he can rule out 2 other things.) Okay, here is were it gets hopeful for me - other than him not giving up right then and there. For 6-7 years I have been talking with every doctor I have had (many unfortunately) and my husband about there being something messed up in my immune system. (I have Endo, Psoriasis, PCOS and some antigen I don't remember the name of.) They are all connected with a faulty immune system! I had not said any of my thoughts to this doctors, yet, and he said, "If I were a betting man, and I'm not, I would bet this is an autoimmune disorder." My mouth hit the floor. He said it may take a while, but he's going to figure this out, and manage the symptoms in the mean time. Depending on the blood test results we may have a rhemy get involved. ANA is the first thing he's looking for.Nothing we talked about today has ever been suggested or brought up by any of the others I've seen. If any of you are in this boat with me, you may want to try this path. I'll keep updating to let you know.:D

  • Okay I just googled Head pain but its not a headache, and it brought me to this website I notice these posting are almost a year old now but had to share. I have been reading and I am glad I am not alone. I had suffered from headache since I was about 8. I have been experiencing a lot of pressure & pounding headaches lately but they don’t last long, sometimes I get very sharp shooting pains as well, also don’t last long. Now what made me look this up is about 5 days ago the surface of my head is painful to touch almost as if I got sunburnt on my scalp. I have yet found the time to go to the doctor, in hopes it will go away in the mean time. I plan to make an appointment next week.

  • Hi Aims-Although the beginning of my posts were about a year ago, the cause is still a mystery. I haven't posted anything for several months because there is not really anything new to post. The rhemey I started seeing said he believed everything I was saying, and that he is intrigued to find out what is the cause. Great! But again it is all hit and miss..........mostly misses. The pain management specialist is now at a lose, but is not totally giving up. Just has no clue what to do right now, or a thought of what to try.I went from doctor appointment to doctor appointment 2-3 times a week for a few months. Now it's "try this for a month and then come back."

  • Hey,2weeks ago now i woke up in the morning with an awful pain in my head... like i had been smacked round the head with a metal pole! The first thing i said was 'omg my heads killing me' It was def not a headache. Since then i have experienced pain in one spot at the top of my head, its not constant but quite frequent. Then (and i know this sounds strange) I bent down when i was at work and got cramp at the back of my head, everyone iv spoke to about this just laughs and says its not possible but, i swear it was def cramp! It lasted for about 5mins but made me feel very sick.I then googled this and came across this site and saw you had the same problem, I've been up and down the doctors and having tests for other things which aren't connect to this, so im a bit apprehencive about going about for the head pains as the doctors will prob think im a hypercondriac. I was just wondering, If you have found out what this mite be? and are you still getting the pains? I'm getting a bit worried and starting to think the worst. Thanks

  • I understand what its like, I have been going through the same situation for a month now, but I figure that if i go to the doctor they wouldn't be much help! Because I have severe stomach pain after a surgery and I went into different doctors and did all possible tests only to find out that they were all normal. • I am currently 14 years old and I have been experiencing frequent pains to the left side of my head. They are not caused by anything in specific, they just happen 2-5 times a day, last about 8 seconds and then go away. They used to be more frequent but less painful, it has been going on for about 5 months now and the longer it goes on the less frequent but the more painful when they do arrive. I had gone to my usual doctor with this complaint and she asked me if I ever had any tingling in my fingers, I responded yes and she told me I needed to go to a neurologist. My appointment isn't for another month and a half but i would love it if anyone has anything on frequent, instant pain to the head that ranges from 6-8 seconds, i feel the pain on the left of my head in a two and a half to three inch line. anything?

  • I am glad I ran across these postings so now I know that I am not the only one experiencing this type of pain. About 5 years ago my daughter got into a scuffle with me and managed to knocked me down, since I was performing spring cleaning my bike was in the livingroom and my head ended up hitting my bike's pedal very hard to where it caused a lump on my skull, I refused medical attention, it never went away. For the past few days I have been experiencing pains on that spot but I also had pain on a few other spots. I'm afraid.

It's a short stabbing pain that lasts a second or two goes away then comes back. My scalp in that area feels tender and I don't have a headached otherwise. This pain is completely different. I'm going to see a doctor about it since this has been ongoing for many years on and off and I haven't addressed the issue. I have strokes and brain annurisms in my family and hope I don't just drop dead all of a sudden.

  • Hi, I'm 17 and I've been having pains that feel like I just got hit in the head with a rock. Its usually on the right side and about the size of my fist. Sometimes it only last for about 30 secs to a min. but it has lasted bout 10 mins then it turns into a migraine and no meds I take will make it go away. I've tried Motrin, Exedrine, and even Lortabs and nothing works. I have to try to go to sleep for a while and its really hard to fall asleep because of the pain and it has made it so bad I became dizzy and felt sick to my stomach. I'm starting to get worried and have been trying to get a Dr. appointment to see what it is. Has anyone had these symptoms?
