wrist injury

I injured my wrist about 8 weeks ago. X-ray showed no fracture, so it was treated as a ligament injury. I wore a brace for about a week, then a cast for 3 weeks. By the end of the term the pain was significantly reduced, but didn't feel like it had finsihed healing. The cast was removed, and the ortho said to slowly get back into normal activity - with no brace. However, the pain returned in full, and it's been almost 4 weeks since the cast was removed with no improvement. I do almost everything with one hand - including typing. There is also something clicking or shifting around inside the wrist now that was never there before. The ortho recently had me get an MRI - I guess to see if there's more ligament (or tendon?) damage than he thought. We'll find out the results in a few days during my next appointment. At this point, I don't know what to expect. If the MRI doesn't show anything in particular, we'll be confused as to the source of the pain. If it DOES show something damaged, then I'll be back at square one with treatment. A cast for 6 weeks this time or what?

I guess I'll find out one way or another during this next appointment, but I was wondering if anybody has had a similar experience - or any advice - to set my mind at ease until then.

  • MRI came back - showed no visible damage. Doctor said to try strengthening excercises daily, but other than that I am receiving no other treatment. It has now been almost 4 months since the injury, and I would rate the wrist at about 50%. I have heard that ligament injuries heal slowly (more slowly than most fractures), but even the doctor thinks I should be further along. He said if it does not improve after another month or so, he would refer me to a hand/wrist specialist. It seems like it's been so long, I am just getting impatient with the whole thing. We'll see what happens from here. Hopefully we'll see some improvement soon.Has anyone out there had a similar injury/problem to either a wrist or ankle? How long did it take to completely heal?

  • i got a wrist injury from weightlifting with wrist straps. the straps pull down on the wrists causing tears in the ligament. i quit lifting for a couple weeks and tried again, but the pain continued. it got worse and i went to a doctor, nothing on the xray, not much on the mri. ligament injuries are hard to see in modern non invasive medicine. since it has been more than six weeks without any repair or splint, the injury is permanemt. it has been 8 months and i will need surgery if the pain doesnt cease. i got a cortisone shot which helped a bit. i would recomend getting one immediately, it reduces swelling on a cellular level so that the ligament can settle and reheal. anyways, it sucks and it looks like its going to be a long time problem. good luck. let me know if you find anything else worth trying.
