I used to have thick hair, but I started to have very itchy scalp about a year ago (I used every dandruff shampoo, head & shoulders, polytar, selsun blue) and my hair began falling off, there's this white head at the root of the hair, and when I scratch my head, I get this white grain sand sized stuff, I have no idea what it is, but it iches like crazy!!..it makes me go nuts, and it's making my hair fall off, my hair grows very thin now, and I'm only 19 years old, before I had this condition, I had soo much hair , you coun't even see my scalp, now it's very visable. Im very concerned Please help!!!!

  • are you male or female? If male-- do you have a history of early onset male pattern baldness in your family? I would go to your doctor and ask about this or a dermatologist. Not sure what it could be, but you might have an infection or something on your scalp. Hopefully they will be able to correct it and get your hair growing back.

  • I have this problem as well... exactly as the poster described it but with one other sympton -- It feels like something's crawling on my head. I don't think it's lice because I had someone checked. My hair has been thin since about 30 (I'm 37 now, male). And early last year, I started taking some pills to get my hair growing again. And it did somewhat. But early this year around January, I used apple cidar on my head because I read somewhere that it can help with oily hairs -- my head is very oily. I don't know if it's the apple cidar but after two applications and a couple of weeks later, my head started to itch and started to fall off like crazy. Those white sand stuff does appear at the root of most of the hairs that fall off but I noticed not all the white sand has a hair... maybe the hair already fell off?I've tried all sorts of drandruff and none-drandruff shampoo. I even tried baby shampoo but nothing works. My family does have MPB but I asked them and they don't recall having the itching and crawling I'm having. I also noticed the itching and crawling appears when I'm under stress. But it sometimes appear when I'm not. I'm also depressed because I lost a family member late last year but I've been depressed for about 4 years now but this problem started about Feb 2007. So I don't know what to think. If anyone else experience anything like this and might know why or did any of the things I listed above, please reply. Thanks

  • it could be mite... there is a certain name for this particular mite, which I cant think of right now... but its hard to see and it makes your hair fall off from the root.... Sulfer kills mite, so does lindaine lotion, but I believe that is not safe, sulfer is safer... They have dog soap (with sulfer) that kills mite, leave it on ten minutes at a time (no longer!!!) that might help.... Which ever one, be sure to read the usages..... Good luck! I had the same by the way...it is doing better now, but I also started taking some hormones for irregular periods... dont know which one did it
