I'm a female in my 30s. I'm posting here because I'm embarrassed and confused and don't know where else to turn at this point. I know most will probably tell me to go to the doctor... To be perfectly honest, I just can't afford it, and I want to get some thoughts from other people before I blow the $200 I don't have on a consultation I may not even need.
So... About 2 weeks ago I noticed that my scalp was itching. Not a bad itch, nor a constant one, more like once every few minutes there was a feeling of something moving around. Of course, my first thought was, "Oh my god, I have lice". When I thought about it I realized there was no way I could've gotten it - I'm an adult and never share anyone's combs, hats, etc. I'm a very private person. My routine is the same every day. I'm not in close contact with anyone except my husband and kids, and I'm sure none of them have it. The kids get checked at school every week (they would've found it there), and my husband shaves his head (so it would be impossible). To top it off, my hair is short, and this is the middle of a very cold winter, which means when I'm in public my head is covered (i.e. I doubt I could've gotten anything from a stranger brushing against me).
After a couple of days the itch abruptly disappeared for about 3 days, and I figured I'd just imagined it. Whew! But then this Monday it came back. Same thing. So by Friday, horrified and embarrassed, I just went ahead and bought lice treatment. And here comes the confusing part. I spent a long time combing out my hair (as the treatment instructed), and I found NOTHING. I had lice as a kid, so I knew exactly what to look for. There was no lice, no nits, not even dandruff. The comb was clear every single time. But only several hours after doing the treatment and washing/drying my hair, the itch was back.
What's going on here? Can one have lice and not be able to comb them out? Or it is something else? I wash and blowdry my hair every two days. I haven't changed shampoos or hair care products in many months. I have no dandruff. Am I going crazy? Any suggestions would be helpful! THANKS!
