I am 61 male. about 6 months ago I started to notice more hair on my brush and in the sink. Before this I was fine just a bit of thinning expected at my age.
This all began as stated above but after a few months of excessive hair shedding my scalp began to itch . Most of the hairs that shed were on the top then they started in the back , even the hairs on my neck shed .
After this I noticed small white flakes on my forehead , you have to look close to see them.
I have looked at every site and this seems to be TE but I have not the money to see a derm. I did switch to a no sulfate shampoo and that helped .
Now at close to 6 months the shedding is much less and I do see new short hairs growing in . During all of this I had my wife cut the back and can tell by the blunt ends which are old hairs and whioch are not.
Before all of this horror I could grow the back and sides down to my shoulders . She cut it twice and last time she cut the back even with my ears and this was two months ago and it has grown.
I still shed both old hairs and some 3 to 4 inch new hairs . It's not only the hair loss that really bothers me but the itching that seems to come and go , this itch happens mostly in the morning.
I have always had fine hair like a dogs hair but never in my life had this itch and so much hair shedding . I have been through a lot of stress due to no job and money issues . I have suffered from anxiety since 1987 as well as panic attacks . I just take Valium for this . My diet is not all that different than it was before all of this. I really don't know what to do . The only part that sheds some hope my way is that the shedding has reduced a lot. Switched to a none sulfate shampoo seemed to help with the oily hair I always had . I used fuller thicker hair for years never had an issue before.
I was shedding perhaps 250 hairs per day and now maybe 100 or so , I stopped counting , that stressed me out more. I have read stress can couse this reaction . My scalp is not red or inflamed just tiny white flakes and the itch. I did try my old shampoo and felt the top of my scalp sort of burned for a bit and I always rinse well after shampooing. I would say by looking I have lost 40% of the hair I had 6 months ago, this is all over the scalp not in one area.
