My husband has had a severe pain in his upper right rib cage. He thought at first he might have broke a rib some way, but the chiropractor said that he had just pulled a muscle. I am concerned as this pain is not getting any better after two weeks. His brother had liver cancer and I have this in the back of my mind. He see's the GP on the 15th but in the mean time does anyone have any idea's what this could be? He is 75 years old if this would be a question.

  • There are many things that this could be. The first two that spring to my mind are either pleurisy or straining of the intercostal muscles. Please note that if it is a pulled muscle, it will take 4-6 weeks to heal. NSAID's like Tylenol or Advil should help with the pain, but at his age he should ask his doc before taking anything. If it's pleurisy (where the pleura, or lining of the lungs, gets 'stuck' together, pulling apart with any breath and causing very sharp pain) there is not much a doc can do about it. Even though it hurts, taking deep breaths and drinking plenty of water has always helped me when I get this.He should see his doc to rule out a broken rib. Broken ribs can puncture the lungs causing all sorts of problems. A chiropractor could only tell if this were the cause if he took an x-ray. Otherwise, it's an educated guess.
