Flu symptoms, but they last only 24 hours at a time, several times a year

Every now and then - maybe 2-3 times a year - I start to feel fluish. Headache, very painful muscles and joints, chills, skin so sensitive my clothes feel like sandpaper. This time I had a cough as well. No nasal discharge or sore throat or anything else. Just these things. It usually begins in the afternoon, and will go on all night. The pain sometimes keeps me awake, and though I can take ibuprofin to ease it enough to allow me to sleep, when that wears off I'm awake again. Usually, the following morning, all the symptoms are gone, except for some residual shakiness or fatigue.

It only lasts about 24 hours and is gone.
I was tested for Lyme disease, and the results were negative. I don't get it. It only lasts 24 hours or so, usually. I'd really like to know...
