I hope someone can help me, I am desperate! The problem is that I have major facial swelling (right side). It all started on Thursday, 9/21/06. The night before, I took a shower at night. As I was putting lotion on my face, I felt a funny feeling when touching besides the right side of my nose. It felt like a NERVE. I was curious and touched and explored it for a few seconds. I did not press on it hard, just touched it, as if touching a pimple. Anyway, the next day, my teeth and gums felt a dull pain. I felt this feeling all day. As the day passed, the pain got worse. By night night, I was in excruciating pain! I took Tylenol/Advil throughout the day, no help really. When I got home, I could no longer take the pain, so I used ice. By midnight, I started to notice a little bit of facial swelling, mainly below my right eye, to the right of my right nostril. The next morning...I woke up looking like a Chipmunk, totally swollen. The right side of my face looked like I stuffed food in it. So around 5:30 am I rushed myself to the emergency room. I WAS TOLD THAT I HAVE THIS: LOCALIZED TENDERNESS SWELLING ABOUT RIGHT INFRAORBITAL NERVE. I was given Ibuprofin 800mg and Penicillin VK 500mg. At first, the Ibuprofin was not working for me. The pain remained the same and at times, felt worse. Unfortunately, this bad thing happened to me near the weekend, so it has been IMPOSSIBLE to reach the Doc that attended me at the hospital. Been leaving her messages, no call back. I was calling her back because my facial swelling HAS NOT GONE DOWN and the Ibuprofin was not working for me. I also saw my primary Doc on the same day I went to the ER and she pretty much told me to wait a bit to see if the swelling goes down. She also referred me to a Specialist, I think a TMJ Doc, not sure. Bad news with this specialist, because he can't see me until next Wed...6 days from my first visit to the ER and to my primary Doc.

HERE IS MY CONCERN:

The swelling has not really gone down. Has anyone experienced what I have and if so, do you remember how long it took before you noticed some of the swelling starting to go down? Right now, the swelling begins just under my eye and goes all the way to my chin area. My right lip is swolen, when I smile...I look like I had a stroke. :( I can't smile normally. The majority of the swelling now is on my cheek, the bottom part. Looks like I have an orange in my mouth. Ugly!!!!

Does anyone know if when the swelling drops, is that a sign that swelling is going down?

I don't know if I'm being impatient, but does anyone know if the swelling go down in about 5 days? This has never happened to me, so I just want to know if the swelling I still have is normal.

4 years ago I had dental work done, I had some veneers put on the upper part of my mouth. Well, after that work was complete...is when I noticed that strange spot on my face. I always knew it was a nerve. It never really bothered me, nor did I notice it, unless I went out of my way to touch it. But being a female, we always touch our faces. I like facials, I like to put lotion on my face, make up, do home facials, tipical girl stuff. I had touched that nerve before, but I never experienced what I am now. I knew something was not right with that nerve, but it did not really bother me, as long as I did not mess with it. Well, last Wed night I was being a Curious George, I touched it and now...I'M PAYING FOR IT! I regret is so much now! :( I look so weird and ugly, I can't even go out in public. It is really disrupting my life.

IF THERE IS A DOC OUT THERE THAT CAN GIVE ME SOME HELPFUL INFO, I would greatly appreciate it! Or someone that has experienced what I am. I just want some HOPE. It is Saturday Today and it seems like all the Dentist in town are shut down or too busy to see me. :*( I have called a few this morning, but they are too busy, even after I told them it is an emergency, or I am getting answering machines. WHEN ONE IS HAVING THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM...every single seconds seems an ETERNITY. :(

I have emailed the Dentist that did the dental work on me back in 2003, but no response from him.

I don't want to go back to the ER, because it will be like an entire new visit. I do have full coverage insurance, but I just prefer to talk to the Doc I saw directly. See what she thinks about my condition and wheter I should go back or not. But unfortunately, none of my calls are being returned. So should I assume the swelling I still have is normal?

HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP ME. If you have any info on my condition, please let me know, ok. BUT MY MAIN CONCERN IS THE SWELLING, HOW LONG DOES FACIAL SWELLING LAST FOR THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM. I just want to stop worrying for something that maybe I should not. Presently, I am in no pain, so that's the good thing.

ANY AND ALL INFO WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

GOD BLESS!!!

  • sounds like you might have an abcessed tooth, i've seen this before. It looked unreal huh? i'm surprised though, that an emergency extraction did'nt take place during your visit to the ER. Maybe i'm wrong, but I doubt it. Oftentimes too i've heard that before the swelling takes place, that a pimple or strange (thing?) might appear on the outside of the face around the same area that the pending abcess rupture will occur. (If that makes any sense). Let me know.

  • I have had the exact same thing. The only thing that helped with the swelling was Fresh Frozen Plasma. They tried high dose prednisone, epinephrine and antihistamines to no avail. I have now been diagnosed with Hereditary Angioedema. Look up HAEA.org. I have been using a new medication called Berinert and am in the process of being switched over to Cinryze. Nerve pain is the worst pain. I hope this helps and you discover what your issues are.
