Elevated Liver Enzymes, Frequent Flu, Fatigue

First of all I need to point out that I have Ulcerative Colitis.

However, even when the disease is in remission and I feel otherwise fine, my liver enzymes are always elevated. On top of this, I keep contracting the same cold/flu every 2nd month which escalates to horrible migrating joint pains that are practically crippling and sometimes last for 5-10 days. I generally feel fatigued and tire easily when doing any physical work, I look very tired with sunkern eyes also despite getting 8 or 9 hours sleep every night (I only started looking this way in the last 6 months).

I'm only 20 and should have loads of energy, but I can't even do light painting for a few hours without feeling tired. I'll often feel a little light-headed while exercising, but my iron levels are fine. I had mono a couple of years ago, which basically triggered Ulcerative Colitis and I've been feeling weak ever since. Is this all related to my Ulcerative Colitis, or is something else going on?

  • Hi Cedricity, From what i have read about ulcerative colitis ther can be various extrainestinal symptoms (that is symptoms that are not related to your intestine) one of those symptoms is Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia. this is where where the immune system goes on its on buzz and starts attacking your own red blood cells as if they were a foreign substance (like a virus). A symptom of this can be feeling tired, short of breath and palid/pale. It may be worth speaking with your Dr and getting a few blood tests done, and if they decide that this is what you have then they may start you on corticosteroids that suppress your immune system a bit (this however has its own problems such as making you more prone to viral illnesses). Hope this helps a bit BRgds Cam

I had mono a couple of years ago, It may be related but related to the mono. 10% of people who get mono end up getting chronic fatigue immunity dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS). CFIDS can exist of "CFIDS crashes" as they often are called. I myself have CFIDS and mine presented for the first 9mths how yours is with what seemed to be like catching flus or viruses over and over again, regularly. This is a common way for this illness to start. I then really went and over did things (pushed my body too hard when not well) and went into a severe CFIDS crash (ended up bedridden for 9mths). 13 yrs later im now on disability for it. Take care http://wwcoco.com/cfids/bernesx.html (CFIDS symptoms) *Also check out the canadian consensus CFS defination (note this illness is defined differently in different parts of the world. Your illness fits more with the canadian defination of it). The not crazy CFS forums are good if you want to learn more about this illness.

  • Just following up:My eyes are getting worse, they're very sunken now. More concerning though is that recently my hearing has deteriorated and my eyes are always dry. I don't know what's going on :(
