My husband first experienced diarrhea after our 2.5 yr old daughter had a stomach flu for 5 days, possibly from going to the Toronto Metro Zoo, or from a bad lasagna (not sure).
Symptoms have been: Bloody diarhea, stomach pains, lower back pain, sensitive on the lower-left ab when touching, and later... weekness, fatigue, irritability, nausea and as of today, lost a total of 20 lbs (2.5 lbs since yesterday).

The bloody diarrhea is so painful and frequent (15-20 times of bloody stools a day) except now he is sleeping most of the time.
The doctor sent a stool sample to the lab for bacteria over a week ago and it was negative.
Then she sent him for blood test for (Celiac disease - gluten allergy) and it has not yet come back (probably Tues. or Wed.)
My husband went to the hospital two days ago because the blood was really scaring him. It is bloody and fleshy looking. So the doctor took his blood test for CBC and a few other things which showed he was ok and was doing the right think to hydrate himself. The ER doctor called a GI and he in turn said he thinks it's most likely a bug and to go see him if he is not better in two weeks.
We are both very scared. He is 30 and now is sleeping most of the day. He told me today "I feel like I'm dying and no one is doing anything for it".
We feel helpless. It's a long weekend and he can't see a doctor for another 2 days, unless of course we go to the hospital again and spend over 5 hours just to get sent back home.
What should we do and what could it be? We are afraid for colon cancer. We want an answer soon because we need to deal with this now, not in 2 weeks!
Thank you so much for reading this.

  • Puzzling...the symptoms are not even close to typical celiac symptoms, why is that being considered? It might be ulcerative colitis...read up on it and see if it rings any bells. He definitely needs to see a good gastroenterologist very soon, who will order the correct testing. I hope he finds answers and feels better soon.

  • I, too, am going through series of bloody diarrhea; this is my 5th series (it has been a chronic issue since past november) usually each series lasting roughly 1-3 weeks long. My medication works for me; but the problem is that the symptoms relapses each and every time. This time, the symptoms have been the worst. I am currently back on my antibiotics (cirpofloxacin), prevacid (or prilosec, whichever is available), and carafate. I believe its some kind of infection in my colon. I go roughly 20-30 times a day, mostly watery and VERY bloody stools with crampy/sharp stomach pain. I hope your husband is doing better. What did your GI doctor say to you? I'm curious to know what's going on w/ him as well....if you need to ask me anything, feel free to contact me at adalfugmailcomDavid

I have been waiting for this to pass. What do you ever find out about your bout? I hope you are feeling yourself again. Take care,Ashley
