Hello there,

My husband's age is 32 years old has been going through this for almost 4 years and 6 months. He starts throwing up and sweats alot all of a sudden.Later,he gets admitted to the ER and stays over there for almost 2-3days with non-stop nasuea and vomiting. He saw the best doctors/ professors and he has done alot of tests such as endoscopy, colonoscopy,CT scan,barium,blood/urine tests and he has also seen a neurologist for head examination. Also,he has seen a shrink.

He was taking alot of medicines such as Dogmatil,Navidoxine,Pantizol,Lexotonil,Librax,Triptizol and some others that i cant remember.Unfortunatly, those medicines havent done any prevention to his attack.

The last doctor that he saw asked him to stop taking any medicines, and he has stopped them all since November 2007.He gets his attacks sometimes every month and a half, every 2 months and sometimes every 3 months. When he gets the attack he hates smelling food,it makes him naseaue. He has lost alot of weight and none of the doctors that he have seen know why this is happeneing!! All his tests are negative and they are not able to know anything.

I have done a reseach about this sickness and found out that it could be FMF "Familial Mediteranean Fever" . We are not sure if it is FMF, though I will be informing the Doc about FMF hoping it could be a lead for answers.
Is anyone familiar with this sickness?or have heard of FMF?

  • Hi there... My heart goes out to you and your husband! From what I read on your post, it sounds like your husband has what I have. It is called Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, also know as CVS. It is not a common diagnosis. I had seen multiple gastroenterologists, and none had heard of this condition. I had the same symptoms as your husband: sudden onsets of nausea, sweating, unstoppable vomiting, the smell or thought of food made me vomit. I was admitted into the hospital every 3 months or so for a few years. I would be in the hospital for about 3 days, recover for a couple of days, then generally back to normal. I would most often have these attacks during sleep or upon awakening. I was completely miserable! I saw Dr. Edward J. Feldman, M.D. at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. He specializes in child, adolescent, and adult gastroenterology. In my list of favorite people, he is the best! He is one of a handful of doctors who even knows what CVS is, and he specializes in treating it. He prescribed Lorazepam, a wonder drug to me! Lorazepam is given to chemo patients whose body does not respond as well to Phenegran. When I start to feel nauseated, I take some Lorazepam and I feel back to normal. The only side effect of Lorazepam is it can make me a little sleepy. CVS can be triggered by certain things, including intense temperature fluctuations (hot summer day), certain foods including those that are acidic (tomatoes, spices, citrus, etc). Mine is especially caused by stress. I have a lot of anxiety, so I take Clonazepam before bed so my body will stay calm during sleep, therefore preventing an attack. It's done wonders. Since being diagnosed by Dr. Feldman, my life has improved dramatically. Just having the diagnosis alone is wonderful! Since my first appt. with Dr. Feldman, I can call him at any time if I need more help. I have not had to be admitted to the hospital for over 2 years! He is a very caring doctor. I hope that this helps you. If you'd like, I'd love to talk with you more about your husband - anything I can do to help. Laura

  • Hi Jeanmarjorie, Just a few questions for you. Does your daughter start vomiting and can't stop? Does she have a fever? How long does she vomit before she has to go to the hospital? What meds does the hospital give her to ease her nausea? I have what is called CVS, Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome. I am nauseated every night and/or morning and must take Lorazepam to stop the nausea. Most times it does work. My CVS is triggered by anxiety, whether it be a happy situation or an unpleasant one. I'd like to help you. Write back when you can...Laura

  • I think i have been suffering with this for 5 years also. I been getting sick since 2003 it started in high school, It seemed like fast food was getting me sick, so i stayed away from it and still do. I've seen tons of doctors none of witch were any help, more likey worse help then anything. I was getting sick on a monthy basis for about 5-7 days usually, but range from 3-10. I just get naused and can't drink or eat. Sweat like no other, Drenching my bed like someone dumped 5 gallons of water over me. I get the hicups, usually also when i'm in a eposide also for a short period. its died down a bit to about every 3 months, but the last eposide i had was very bad. I feel complete helpess when i'm sick, latey catching myself crying. I also seen a Holistic doctor who said i have parasites, And she mention that parasites attack on a monthy basis when its a "full moon". I Read about CvS on the web and mentioned it to a few of my doctors who never heard of it, but one did reseach on it, and still couldn't help. The meds they give me didn't help and only There is a supossitorys i tried that work but take time to work and when they wear off i'm sick again, And i totally wiped out for at least a week after i get sick. I feel naused almost everyday in the morning, seems like after i go to the bathroom i feel better 10 min later. but it always comes back usually to hunt me later or soon then i think in some point in the day. I'm addicted to water when i nausead and always want to get in the bathtub with warmwater. if this doctor in LA is that good seems like i would want to give him a shoot. make a trip to LA, since i live in san diego I really don't know how much more i can deal with of this ****.

Hi, am 30 years old now, I have these attacks since I was 15. it happens to me on monthly bases, one time a month I keep vomitting for 3 or 4 days , and I use a lot of wieght, I did all nessasry test, all was ok, even when I have the attackm all my body results are ok. once I kept vomitting for one week, and actully I was deing, doctors didnt know what is wrong with me, they gave me Valuim( diazpam) IV , and it worked like magic, I woke up and everything was ok, I could eat , walk and do everything. so I kept using diazpam when I have the vomitting attacks, but one knew why its working with me. when i was 23 years old, I went to a neuroligist, after doing EEG and MRI , and diganosed me as having " MIGRANE A APPLICATION" he gave me a treatment for 4 years ( xanax, tryptizol and inderal) , it was like magic, i never had the vomitting attacks during treatment , not even once!!! i never went to hospital...and my life changed. now am 30 years old, I take xanax when i feel am sick and some sleeping pill. I think anti-anxity meds work on this case.
