This might be kind of long so let me give you the brief rundown. I'm 27/m 140lbs. with a history of what only can be described as excruciating pain along my waistline below my belly button sometimes when I eat and drink fatty food and carbonation/caffine combinations. This has been going on since I was 14 or so, but has become progressively worse in the last few years. However, I can control it with diet by simply not over eating and not drinking caffine, or doing so in moderation. For example, I have only had 2 episodes in the last 4 months.

Now, recent history started back in April with what I thought was a pain or discomfort on my right side that extended from my abdomen to my back. At this time, it was only felt on the right side. When I went in to see the doctor about it, they checked for gallstones, gallbladder disease and pancreatic conditions. Nothing abnormal was found. From there, about a month later, I started to have a burning/drilling feeling just below my sternum and slightly to the right, again extending through to my back. After another month of this I finally went back in to see the doctor about a possible ulcer. He suggested we do an endoscopy to see what's going on. After the EGD he found a hiatal hernia that was causing some esophagitis. At that time I thought, "Great, I finally have an answer." A month of prilosec and I'm good.

Around this time is when things start to become confusing. It is now June and I began to have mild to moderate side and abdominal pain on BOTH sides, to the point where it woke me up at night. It extends from my hips up my sides and really, all around my abdomen now. It especially is occuring below and to the right of my belly buttonand into my groin. However, it is sporadic and comes and goes. Sometimes there is a sudden onset and it hurts, then it is gone after a few minutes. The same thing continues to occur in my back. The doctors have done over 30 different lab tests on me with nothing appearing to be abnormal. The heartburn and nausia are gone, but the burning/dull achy pain all around my abdomen remains. And, to top everything off, I've lost 10 pounds in the last 4 months without trying. I wrestled for 7 years and I know it is NOT easy for me to loose weight.

So, this is where I stand. Could this be intestinal cancer, colon cancer, etc? I have not had bloody stools, only the life long diarreha associated with waistline pain and now the occasional constipation. The abdominal CT I had done showed everything was normal. There's a reason this is happening. I'm not making it up. Someone please help.

  • Cancer, very unlikely given your age. Since your initial symptoms were controllable with dietary modifications, I would say caffeine/carbonation to blame (both increase intestinal gas and transit time = gassy distention and pain). The hiatal hernia is not responsible for lower abdominal pain. The Prilosec can cause a little diarrhea and excess gas. See your gastroenterologist again.

  • Hi - dont know if you've gotten this resolved, but I had the exact same thing. I ended up i the emergency room a couple of times. It had something to do with the acid levels in my stomach - basically too much. Over the years I have managed through diet, but watch out if I have too much coffee or any spicy foods. Can be treated - Also is related to Acid Re-flux. Hope this helps
