Strange Bowel Movements

In 95 I suddenly had pain, swelling and a lump in my mid-left abdoninal area. A MRI, radioactive iodine, barium enema and scoping did not find anything. 3 different doctors came up with 3 different diagnosis:
1. Blocked intestine
2. twisted intestine
3. Diverticulitis

Swelling went away as did the lump, but low grade pain exists still today.

Now I have been starting to have weird bowel movements.
Starts with gas which persists no matter what I eat.

First movement is normal. As the day goes on, they get smaller (I have 5 or 6 a day), more oily and burn - they also get looser (usually break apart when the toilet is flushed).

I have soiled pants just from the gas (not just underwear but the pants as well).

I am 40, eat salads at least 3-5 times a week.
I am lactose intolerant so I do not eat any dairy (none at all).

No 2 doctors agree on what is causing this.

Anyone have any ideas?

  • Saw the doctor. He thinks its either an issue with fiber (not being processed correctly) or something with the pancreas. He has put me on a high fiber diet.First 3 days it worked beautifully. Today not so well.

  • Have you considered that the "lettuce" may be causing your problem with the bowel movements? My boss was okay with eating lettuce for over 30 yrs. Suddenly she started having problems with bowel movements getting ****r and ****r. Her and her doc finally figured out that it was lettuce. My neighbor also has the same problem with lettuce. As long as they both stay away from lettuce they are fine. Just something to consider or experiment with.

  • Me again. Also, I've been pretty much the same problem as you. BM's start out normal with gas then move to Diarrhea. So I've been doing a lot of research. You may want them to check your Thyroid. An overactive Thryroid (Hyperthyroidism) can cause Diarrhea. Which is part of your endocrine system (including the pancreas as your doc mentioned). I've been through all the tests you have and nothing so far. Even was tested for "Celiac Disease" which is an intolerance to Wheat Gluten. But that isn't it. I know how frustrating it can be. And the "messing" your pants thing is really not fun. Been there and done that quite a few times thinking it was just the gas or not making it to the pot on time. Good luck to you. I hope you find out what's ailing you.

  • Ive been thru it all these symtoms for years. The latest thing Ive tried that seems to work is probiotic yogurt. It stopped my diarrhea overnight!! I used yoplait digestive yogurt. Ive also tried other probiotics like colon health. They helped but not to the extent of the yogurt.
