sharp pain right after I swallow

Does anyone know what might be wrong with me? Frequently, not always, I have a severe pain when I swallow food. It feels as though something is stuck, I can't breathe, and then the pain dulls until it goes away. I have to stop eating at that point, or the pain continues and intensifies. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The doctor put me on two ACIPHEX 20 mg tablets per day (1 morning, 1 evening) and that stopped this feeling (which, I might say is scarey and hurts lots!) After about a year I decided I was "cured" and stopped my Rx. In about 3 weeks the incidents of this started again. As you said, "Not always." But for me some is too much. I am now on Nexium and it also keeps the pain away. I have had one incident in the last 2 years, so to me the Rx is working.
