Is reflux a symptom of celiac? It is my primary symptom and I've heard conflicting stories.

  • Reflux is common with many different illnesses. I have hypothyroidism and I have GERD. My friend has some kind of stroke like illness going on and has Acid Reflux. My mom had acid reflux with that started when she was diagnosed with angina. If you think you have celica, then you should do a simple blood test that can tell you if you have it or not.. Good luck...

  • Its my primary symptom, but not my sole symptom. I have stomach/intestinal pain after eating a lot of the time. Also, I'm going to the bathroom a lot more (if you know what I mean). The reflux came first and has been diagnosed and is being treated. I'm on nexium for it (which I kind of wonder if that has contributed to my symptoms). I think I'm eventually going to see a GI doctor, but I just can't seem to make the time to get there.I'm supposed to wean off some of my nexium after my next ENT appt. in April. I guess most people are unable to do it.

  • If you think you have celiac, ask your doctor for the bloodwork that detects it. Don't go gluten free until after you get the results of the bloodwork, because a gluten free diet can cause false negatives in the bloodwork and/or any follow up endoscopy. I have your basic symptoms, and I tested negative for celiac disease. What I have is called irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). I did find that nexium, prilosec et al made my IBS worse by neutralizing stomach acid that is essential for healthy digestion/intestinal health.
