Hello, My mother is 64 and I fear she may be close to dying because doctors are not able to diagnose her abdominal pain which she has had 10+ years. She has had to take laxatives for many years or cannot have a BM. The GI doctors blame her problems on laxative overuse, which I know is not good for her at all, but she does not have any other options in order to avoid compaction of her bowels. She did not start the laxatives until she could no longer have a normal BM. About 3 months ago she began loosing weight and now weighs only 85 pounds. She has had GI studies done and they can't find anything wrong. The CT scan wasn't helpful because she doesn't have enough fat to get a clear view of her organs. Her blood work has all been normal except for high EOS on the CBC. She has constant pain in her lower right side that never seems to lessen. She doesn't sleep much at night either. She has some past kidney problems but because nothing showed up on the CT scan, I cannot get the urologist to do another IVP of her kidneys or do any other kidney tests. She has sponge kidney disease and many past infections and her kidneys are lower than normal. She has had a hysterectomy in 1972 and other surgeries. I cannot get a doctor to do laparoscopy because they feel adhesions would not cause her extreme weight loss so they don't think she has adhesions. She is going for an MRI of her abdomen this week but I don't have much hope of them finding anything on that either. She was blood tested and GI scope tested for celiac. She has Barrret's syndrome and back pain from stenosis, scoliosis and compression but cannot survive any operations for her back due to weight and weakness from the GI problems. She does have a distended bladder on all the x-rays, and is scheduled for a bladder scope. She had polyups removed from her bladder in 1963 but the doctor doesn't think the bladder is causing the problems now. I welcome and advise or help or ideas in finding a doctor who might possibly help my mother. Thank you and please pray for mother. My father died a few months ago and I can't bear to loose my mother also. Cheryl

  • If I were you, I'd get a second opinion preferably at a totally seperate hospital/doctors office. Something is definiately going on and they should be working overtime to find out what is going on. There are two seperate health systems in our local city and I ended up switching from one to the other. I was diagnosed with a rare illness right away, after 10 years of illness. It helps to start from scratch with new doctors. They don't have judgemental ideas and look at all angles to find out what's going on. Just my opinion. Has your mother had her appendix out? It could be some of the cause of her lower right pain. She doesn't have to have a full blown appendicitis for there to be issues with her appendix. Just a suggestion. Has she ever been tested for Hirschsprung's disease? I know that HD is mainly in children but know that adults can have it to. I'd have her tested, just in case. Not sure what else I could suggest. These are just my opinions/suggestions. I am not a doctor. Praying that you find out what is causing your mother to be so ill and in so much pain. May God give you both peace and strength always. Praying.God Bless.

  • CJ, My mother did have her appendix out years ago. Maybe the MRI of her abdomen will show something. I read that a high EOS could mean parasites but I'm not that would cause all of her pain. I'm going to ask her doctor about that. I've been reading about people who have lost a lot of weight such as in cancer and other diseases, are being given progesterone which makes the body build fat tissue. She is down to 85 pounds so I was going to ask the doctor to try the progesterone pills to put weight on her. Thank you for your prayers. Cheryl
