How concerned should I be? (bloody stool)

How do I know when to go in to the doctor's? There are small to minimal amounts of blood coating my stool and pain during and for a short time after going. My stool is usually very wide and from the way things feel my mom (and I) suspect that my rectum is tearing slightly or I have a hemmorhoid. As my mother recently went in with the same symptoms (only more blood) and was diagnosed with a hemorhoid, I'm both more likely to trust her... while at the same time worried that her judgement may be biased. The fact that I have been known to worry excessively over some things makes me want to get another opinion.

As far as treatment goes, I've followed advice and increased my fiber intake, and it does make a noticable improvement. What I want to know is what to look for as signs that we may be wrong and when I should seek professional advice.
