Haven't Eaten Solid Food Since Feb - HELP!!!

I am 20-something female who woke one morning in Feb. and was unable to eat. The food feels like it gets stuck after the first swallow. If I put lots of butter or sour cream on very soft food, I am able to eat a small amount.

The drs can't figure out what is wrong with me. I have had almost every test in the book. I have had dozens of labs to check for auto-immune diseases and esophogeal tests to check for achalasia. Everything comes back normal, except a lab for Sjogrens was slightly elavated.

I have IBS with constipation and GERD. One test showed my esophagus was "slightly sluggish" and that I swallowed normally 78% of the time. The doctors stated that even so, I should be able to eat normally.

I have lost weight and am living on a soft food diet. This has been going on for nearly 6 months and I am at a total loss. I read recently that IBS could cause trouble swallowing. I would like to know if ANYONE has ANY symptom that I have or has ANY IDEA what could be wrong with me.
Thank you!

  • I feel your pain. I have been going through similar symptoms. One suggestion is over the counter "artificial saliva" it helps lubricate your mouth and esophagus before eating. I have all the same problems you have with GERD, IBS, fibromyalgia and chronic fatique syndrome. They are now tesing me for Sjogrens and SLE. There are more tests for Sjogrens if they have not done them. Visit the website online for Sjogrens Syndrome. That might hold the key. There is also a test for a motility disorder of the esophagus at some medical centers. It does sound like a dryness problem with having IBS with constipation and GERD. Some of these reflux medications can be drying. I am still trying to figure out mine. Let me know what they discover. There are alot of autoimmune disorders out there. When I did a search for dry mouth it gave me 82 different causes including numerous autoimmune disorders but Sjogrens and SLE were the top causes. I have had trouble with weight as well. I found drinking Carnation Instant Breakfast is one way to keep the weight on and still get nutrition along with oatmeal with lots of milk, soups, slippery foods like pasta. It's a challenge for sure. Best of luck.
