Hi I have just been told that I have celiac disease but my blood work was negative and I do not have the symptoms. I have unexplained weight gain(50 lb in 2 yrs) w/ no change w/ diet and exercise changes. Lower left abdominal pain that they can not find a reason for. Don't know what to suggest to the Dr instead of celiac. Any ideas?

  • If you have been feeling weak and tired, excessive thirst and urination, it may be diabetes. Have your blood sugar tested a few times, not just once. Celiac is a common misdiagnosis of diabetes. I hope you get the answers you need.Take care!

  • Go see a GI doc. Diagnosing celiac is not by blood test alone, you need to have a biopsy to confirm. Abdominal pain associated with celiac is more often on the right side, not the left. And you usually don't gain weight until after you start your gluten free diet (my 8 year old gained 19 pounds in two months after he started his gf diet). However, many people with celiac have no symptoms whatsoever. Good luck.

  • I definitely recommend seeing a Gastroenterologist. You can get an endoscopy to make sure it's really Celiac Disease (or not). Many peopel with CD have no symptoms, or different symptoms from those that are "textbook". But it may be something else, and it would be good to get that ruled out.
