Hi, this is my first post. I am a 48 year old male who has always been in good health.
Starting about 5 weeks ago I began having a lot of gas pain in my lower abdomen. The pain was very hard to pinpoint, the only thing definite is that it was in my lower abdomen. After a few days I began having jarring pains when I walked. I also began having watery diarrhea. I went into the ER and they tested me up one side and down the other. They initially thought it might be diverticulitis or appendicitis but blood tests ruled that out. They gave me a CT scan and saw that my bile duct was dilated so they thought perhaps it was bile duct stones. They did an ultrasound but it was inconclusive. I saw a specialist and he had me go for more scans which ruled out stones. Meanwhile the pain and symptoms tapered off and just became a dull burning ache with gas and constipation. All the tests came out basically normal (besides the dialated duct), no blood in stool, etc.
The doctor had me come in a few weeks later and have an endoscopy and colonoscopy. He did the endoscopy to rule out ulcers, because I had tested positive for the bacteria that sometimes causes them. During the colonoscopy he found I have diverticulosis but no polyps. He took three biopsies while doing the scopes. One in my stomach, one in my colon and one in my small intestine. Besides the diverticulosis, everything from both scopes is normal.
The symptoms for the last few weeks have been constipation and gas and a vague burning pain. The pain seems to move around randomly at times, but is mainly in the lower middle abdomen. The symptoms come on strong for a few days and taper off for a few days. like a roller coaster.
My appetite is fine, I eat like a horse. I am experiencing no fatigue. I work out every day. The tests keep coming out normal. I basically feel normal except for the bowel trouble.
From looking online the symptoms seem to match most closely with irritable bowel syndrome. Ive also read that when diverticulosis shows symptoms, they closely match those of IBS.
Im worried I might have some weird cancer or something (nervous because of the biopsies). What could be causing all of this?
