Constant diarreah and fatigue

My partner has been suffering from chronic diarreah and fatigue for a year now. his libido has also been affected and he suffers from bloating but has had no bleeding from the rectum

He has just had a sigmoidoscopy which showed no inflammation in the colon but he did have a small polyp which has been removed and sent for biopsy. He had been told previously that he had IBS (has suffered from diarreah on and off for a few years) but due to no inflammation we have been led to think that is unlikely

The nurse performing the test said she would have expected to see some inflammation if he had cancer but obviously this cannot be ruled out until the biopsies come back

Obviously I am concerned that this will be the diagnosis but I wonder whether food intolerances may be to blame as when we have been away on vacation his stools are more 'normal'

He is 42 and otherwise fit and well although he does smoke and drink though neither to excess

We need to wait another two weeks or so for results but I wondered whether anyone else has had similar tests/symptoms
