Sorry if this is in the wrong forum!
I am a 15 yr old male, and am wondering if i should get tested for celiac disease. My sister and dad have it, and for a long time now my stools have been VERY smelly and within the past 4 months i have been getting increasingly forgetful and depressed. For many years i have had an unpredictable digestion (one day constipated, the next diarrhea) and stomach pains were diagnosed as bad acid reflux (low gamaglobulin something???)

Am i right in thinking the above are possible symptoms?

Should i get tested?

Thanks.

  • I recommend Dr. Kenneth Fine's "EnteroLab". See his website at www.finerhealth.com As long as you don't have an "IgA deficiency", Dr. Fine's "stool sample testing" is very reliable. It is also non-invasive. Ask his nurse about a blood test called "total secretory IgA", that will tell whether or not you have an "IgA deficiency" (or not). Another thing you could do, is to AVOID GLUTEN for 3 months, and see if your symptoms go away! Many people have gluten sensitivities--it's common!

  • I have had IBS for years. Allot of the same symptoms. What has helped me: drink 1/2 your weight in filtered/bottled water per day: 120 lbs.= 60 ozs., eat fiber daily & def. gluten free. My prayers are with your family!

  • I realize this response is late and you have probably acted on your inquiry. If not, yes you should be tested for celiac disease. Celiac or Sprue disease is a familial disease. I found remarkable lethargy to be one of the most prevalent symptoms if one has celiac disease.

  • When the docs thought that my son had celiac disease at that young of age their first reasoning is that he had low vitamin D E and iron. what happens is when eating gluten there are these things that are called celia that start coating your stomach and make it practically impossible for your body to get the nutrients that you need from the foods of even from taking vitamins. The cheaper way to find if you should even think of getting the test for celiacs is get those 3 vitamins tested. if they are low in any way then the next step is to cut out gluten from your diet as much as possible and see if you start to get any better. remember if you do have celiacs it will take a while for this to even help at all around 3 weeks. If that does help then start eating gluten again for about a month so that the doctors can get an accurate reading with the test orthoscopy with a minor non intrusive biopsy in the stomach lining. my son did not feel a thing during this procedure so dont be afraid

  • you might also get your thyroid checked and thats a simple blood test. It can cause depression and even arrhythmia of the heart where it almost feels like there is fluttering in your throat. It can make you feel like you are having panic attacks. it can also cause forgetfulness.

here are some symptoms that you may not even realize go with what is going on. dry patches on your skin out of no where and I am not talking about just the normal stuff you get from the winter. hair loss and a difference in hair texture. ridges in your finger nails and very thin finger nails and yes even acid reflux.

also if you have thyroid disease you would get random glands swell up in your groin, throat and arm pits. This is something easily taken care of with a simple med once a day so again please dont let this disease scare you. it is serious but can be treated very easily and the testing is not painful either. hope you find what you need and hope i was helpful.
